LH Comment: Think top 3 star rather than the designated 4 and you will be very happy with this London townhouse style hotel. The location is one of the best in London with three tube stations within easy reach. From this reasonably quiet street you can stroll to Covent Garden, Soho and Oxford Street.
The hotel is getting a little dated but is very clean and guest reviews are mostly positive.
About the Academy Hotel
The Academy Hotel is based in Bloomsbury, the heart of London's literati set, where respected authors such as Virginia Woolf, Charles Kingsley and E.M Forster lived. Set behind an austere Georgian facade in a picturesque enclave of this exclusive area; this hotel is steeped in charm and character and is conveniently located near to some of London's most fascinating attractions.
The hotel's Guest rooms range from Single to Double Suite, and will appeal to die hard anglophiles who come to London looking for rooms decked out in Victorian frills and knick-knacks. Furnishings are very comfortable and chosen for their traditional styles, with luxurious fabrics such as Egyptian cotton linen, to ensure a good night's sleep. In-room amenities show the attention to detail put into the hotel's service, with extras such as complimentary business cards and shoe shine and an iPod docking station, so you will have everything you need within reach, whether you are attending a meeting, or simply need a soundtrack whilst you hit the streets.
The hotel has an incredible location, just a few minutes' walk away from The British Museum, where you can view over 7 million artifacts, ranging from statues of mythological creatures, to Islamic pottery, to Incan death masks. You can also walk to Soho, a vibrant area renowned for its cafes and nightlife and a great place to people watch. Also nearby is the Chinatown district where you can find superb Asian cuisine and some very unique groceries. If you want to indulge in some retail therapy or enjoy a musical, Covent Garden, about a 20 minute walk away is packed with independent, designer and high street boutiques to suit every taste and budget. The Actor's Church is located in Covent Garden's mediaeval market piazza, so it is unsurprising that there are a vast amount of large and small theatres, providing both avant-garde and family friendly entertainment.
The hotel is also very well situated for travel, whether you arrive by bus, car, and train or from much farther afield. Tottenham Court Road tube station is just a few minutes' walk away, which services the Northern and Central lines, from which you can explore many other parts of London. Leicester Square tube station is just one stop from Tottenham Court Road, which services the Northern and Piccadilly lines. From here you have a direct link to many other central London locations; King's Cross St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminates); and Heathrow Airport. If you are driving to the hotel, it is situated just off the main A4 road, which can be accessed via the M4 and M25; however, guests should note that the hotel is in the congestion charge zone.
The Academy's location is just one of the many perks of staying in this very quaint hotel. When you check in, be sure to request one of the rooms overlooking the garden for a pleasing view. Guests should note that breakfast is served at the hotel, but the Co-op Supermarket just a few minutes' walk away offers a more convenient and cheaper option.
