LH Comment: Choose from five themes of botany, music, geometry, ornithology and astronomy at this new 4 star hotel. Very close to the South Kensington tube station and surrounded by good shops and restaurants in this prime area of central London. The Natural History Museum is 5 minutes walk away. Our tip is to request a room at the rear due to Harrington Road being quite busy. Seriously good guest reviews.
About the Ampersand Hotel
South Kensington is a very upmarket area bordering Chelsea and one that we at London-Hotels favour as a top place to stay.
The Amersand Hotel opened in 2012 to high guest reviews. It is a tastefully themed 5 star hotel although most would actually class it 4 star as it has no swimming pool , spa or on site parking. Even so it is a hotel we would fully recommend to the discerning visitor to London.
Some would call the design quirky, a bit whimsical in fact. However, as a nod to the Ampersands locality, neighbouring museums and even the Royal Albert Hall, the hotel have designed each room type with it's own unique and local stamp. The focus being on discovery and wonder. You will find the rooms depict patterns from the nearby V&A Museum's costume collection, the Science Museums planets and phials, Ornithological drawings from the Natural History Museum and so on.
For example, the single and small double rooms decor and furnishings have been inspired by Astonomy from the Science Museum. Superior rooms take their musical inspiration from the nearby Royal Albert Hall. Deluxe Rooms take their inspiration from the Natural History Museums Ornithological drawings, the Deluxe Studios have a botanical flavour and Suites take on a geometric form.
The hotel does insist that although these themes are a little quirky and a perhaps too modern for some hotel traditionalists, the overall aim for each of the guest rooms is comfort and a good nights sleep!
The room amenties include, free WiFi, LCD TV's with on-demand movies, tea and coffee making facilities, Laptop safe, free soft drinks from the minibar, 24 hour room service, air-conditioning and a media hub. The Superior Studios have an iPod dock and Nespresso Coffee machine. The Suites have separate sitting rooms and kitchenette area with Microwave oven, floor to ceiling length windows and in the eaves what is described as "Mary Poppins" balconies with stunning views over Kensington, each bathroom has a free standing bath with either a walk-in shower or bath/shower combination, each of the Suite bathrooms have an inbuilt TV.
Dining at the Ampersand is well catered for with two main restaurants with a third "private dining" option. The Apero is tucked beneath the Victorian Arches offering meals with flavours of the Mediterranean. The beautifully appointed Drawing Rooms are described as the "Luxurious Heart" of the Ampersand offering French meets British Cuisine and all day "lite bites" Afternoon Tea is served daily with exquisite pastries. Finally, the Wine Room is an intimate clubby style room with large oak table and sturdy leather chairs. Seating for 10 it is intimate and a whole wall is given over to showcasing the hotels finest wines. The Wine Room can be hired on a private basis. This room is ideal for intimate dinners, private parties of 10 and without doubt the gourmet food and fine wines compliment the sumptious surroundings.
On the lower ground floor guests have access to the Ampersands fitness room open twenty four hours per day. With state of the art "technogym" equipment, the small gym has a bike, treadmill and crosstrainer with an integrated digital screen, weights are also available. An iPod dock and WiFi are also available for guests to use freely. Should you feel the lure of the great outdoors, nearby Kensington Gardfens has some great routes for running, roller blading or even horseback riding. Staff will supply maps upon request. Should you need that extra push with a personal trainer, the hotel will be happy to help, again this is on a request basis, please ask a member of staff. In addition to the fitness room the Ampersand has a games room with table tennis, available to hotel guests when the room is not in use for meetings.
The hotel has three well equipped meeting rooms, the above mentioned Wine Room being one , ideal for small board-meetings. Rooms can be booked separately or all 3 together. The largest room, the Library seats 20. More information on the hotels meeting rooms can be provided upon request.
Finally, the immediate area around the hotel is buzzing with things to do for people from all walks of life, young or old. There is something for everybody here, museums, stunning parks with walkways, jogging routes, sailing lake and horse riding, top London nightclubs, huge array of restaurants, typical London pubs, shops, boutiques, the world famous Harrod's store! Kensington and in particular South Kensington is a fantastic place to stay and we feel you will not be dissappointed with the Ampersand Hotel.
