"One of five stations named after famous London pubs"
Angel station was originally built by the City & South London Railway in 1901 and is named after the once-famous Angel Inn, which dates back to 1638. It is one of five stations on the London Underground network named after public houses - the other stations are Elephant & Castle, Manor House, Royal Oak and Swiss Cottage.
As with many other stations on the line, Angel was originally built with a single central island platform serving two tracks. For years, the station suffered from congestion, overcrowding and passenger safety concerns about the incredibly narrow platform. The station was rebuilt in the early 1990s and is now safe and modern. Angel has the third longest escalators in Western Europe, after Vastra skogen in the Stockholm Metro and Kamppi station in the Helsinki Metro. It rises 27.4m (90ft) and is 60m (197ft) long.
"The home of angels and the A-Team"
In popular culture, the Angel tube station appears on Ed Sheeran's The A-Team music video. In Neil Gaiman’s novel Neverwhere, which was made into a famous TV series, The Angel Islington is the name of an actual angel living under the station in London Below.
Great hotels in the area include the Hilton London Islington Hotel, Premier Inn London Islington Green, Jurys Inn Islington Hotel and Anthea Makedonia.
