More famous than it is attractive, Baker Street, London is a major thoroughfare in the north west of London. It crosses the Marylebone Road and forms an important junction for traffic in this part of the city.

The closest tube station is, of course, Baker Street, and as this station is on the Bakerloo, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan and Jubilee Lines it is easy to get to from almost anywhere else in London. The station is a huge interchange, but if you need to get a bus then you will want any of the ones that stop on the Marylebone Road, or on Baker Street itself. Baker Street is also within walking distance of Regents Park and Marylebone tube stations, and if you want the south end of the street (the A41) you can walk from Marble Arch, Bond Street, or Oxford Circus.

Made famous by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in his series of short stories and novels about the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Baker Street still draws people who want to see where the sleuth would have lived. In 221B Baker Street, which used to be a bank, there is now housed the Sherlock Museum. This is a small attraction consisting of having decorated the rooms as if they were a late Victorian lodging house, and having provided props from the stories, as well as a series of dioramas from the stories housed in the attic. It is an interesting if small attraction if you happen to be interested in Sherlock Holmes, although it does not make it clear that he was a fictional character, and some visitors have been known to have become confused by that.

In the 1900s Baker Street had one of Londons most famous attractions in it when, in 1835,  the first permanent exhibition of Madame Tussauds wax figures was opened there. Madame Tussaud had been a French woman who made wax impressions of beheaded aristocrats during the French Revolution but moved to England with her husband and travelling show of waxworks at the turn of the nineteenth century. Although the first permanent exhibition was in Baker Street, the show was moved around the corner in 1886 to where it now resides on Marylebone Road with the London Planetarium, and both of these attractions remain well worth a visit.

The rest of Baker Street consists mainly of shops and office buildings, interspersed with the odd residential building. It is home to a reasonable number of pubs and restaurants. In the 1960s the Beatles Apple Boutique was on Baker Street and Dusty Springfield lived there as well. It also housed the head offices of Marks and Spencer until they moved to the Paddington Basin in 2004.

Although it has proved a muse for artists as diverse as Jethro Tull, Gerry Rafferty, The Rolling Stones, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as being the home for a number of fictional detectives, the street itself does not have much to offer the visitor to London nowadays.
