Baker Street underground station is a Zone 1 tube station located in the City of Westminster's North West London district Marylebone. Boasting the most platforms of all London's underground stations (10 overall), the station is serviced by five lines: the Metropolitan line (purple) between Great Portland Street and Finchley Road stations, the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines (yellow, pink) between Great Portland Street and the way-down-under lines of the Bakerloo line (brown) between Regent's Park and Marylebone and the Jubilee line (grey) between Bond Street and St John's Wood.
Located on Baker Street itself the station is probably, definitely, most famous for being located on the street where fictional character Sherlock Holmes lived. There is a statue of the super-sleuth outside the Marylebone Street exit and the Sherlock Holmes Museum's atmospheric rooms are waiting to be explored at 221B Baker Street - the famous sleuth's address. Other places of interest to visit in the area are Madame Tussauds Wax Museum which first opened on Baker Street in 1835, moving a year later around the corner, east of the station, to Marylebone Road, and next door to here is the London Planetarium.
If you head north up Baker Street out of the station you'll discover the beautifully huge Regent's Park - a luscious green space that is home to London's Open Air Theatre, cafes, tennis courts, the London Central Mosque which sits on the western side of the park and along the northern edge of the park is the London Zoo. West of here (north-west of the station) is the infamous Lord's Cricket Ground which is around 15-20 minutes walk away from the Baker Street Station. To the west of the station down Marylebone Road is Marylebone Station on Melcombe Place, further on from here are the Edgware Road stations and south-west of here is Paddington Station with the northern edge of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens just south of here on the other side of Bayswater Road.
If you walk south down Baker Street from the station there is an area of great shopping, entertainment, bars, watering holes and top restaurants to be discovered including the Screen on Baker Street Cinema on the corner of Paddington Street (near to the University of Westminster) and the delicious restaurant Michael Moore which is about half way down Baker Street to the east on Blandford Street. Further south-east of here is Manchester Square where the Wallace Collection is located containing 18th century French paintings and decorative art and a few minutes walk east of here is Harley Street where an abundance of private doctors and medical specialists are located. Keep heading directly south down Baker Street and it becomes Orchard Street which abruptly ends when it meets Oxford Street, with Selfridges department store to the left.
