"On the right track for music, art, history and possibly the home of Shakespeare"
You are likely to alight at Barbican tube station if you are visiting the Barbican Arts Centre, which is the largest performing arts centre in Europe. It hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and art exhibitions. It also houses a library, three restaurants and a conservatory. The London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra are based in the Barbican Centre's concert hall. The arts centre is part of the larger Barbican Complex that also houses the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a residential estate.
Barbican Underground station is on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines between Farringdon and Moorgate stations, in Travelcard Zone 1.
The station was originally called Aldersgate Street, because of its location. It replaced an earlier building at 134 Aldersgate Street, which for many years had a sign claiming "This was Shakespeare's House". Although the property was close to the site of the historic Fortune Playhouse and documents from 1598 say that a "William Shakespeare" owned the house, it has not been proved that the famous playwright ever lived there. In the road opposite the station there is a pub called "The Shakespeare". The station’s name was changed to Barbican on 1 December 1968.
"Tunnel complex under Smithfield meat market from bygone days of travel and trade"
The station, although part of the Underground network, was built using cut-and-cover techniques and much of it is open to the sky. There are some short canopies to keep out the elements. At the west end of Barbican’s central island platform is a disused signal box. From the end of the platform you can also see the start of a complex of tunnels leading under Smithfield meat market. Livestock for the market was at one time delivered by rail and there was a substantial goods yard there. At one time Thameslink trains also stopped at Barbican, but these stopped in March 2009.
Good hotels and serviced apartments in the area include Montcalm London City Hotel, Citadines Barbican London and the Thistle City Barbican Hotel. London bus routes 4, 56, 100 and 153 stop near Barbican station.
