Basinghall Avenue EC2 is one of the quieter streets in the dynamic EC2 business district. Basinghall Street EC2 lies at the west of Basinghall Avenue and Coleman Street EC2 lies adjacent to the east end of the avenue. London Wall EC2 runs parallel above Basinghall Avenue. The street has buildings mostly used for commercial purposes and includes Girdlers Hall, a Livery Hall, and gardens.
The Girders Hall on Basinghall Avenue is a livery company hall. Trade and Craft associations have always thrived in London and the City of London companies are known as a group called the Livery. There are 38 livery company halls in London. The building on the Basinghall Avenue which is neo-Georgian was built in 1961 and has attractive gardens with shrubs and a mulberry tree.
Saint Lawrence Jewry is a few streets away from Basinghall Avenue located on Gresham Street EC2. Built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1670-1678, this church is now the official Church of the Corporation of London.
Basinghall Avenue is surrounded by many attractions that define the London EC2 district. London Wall EC2 only moments away marks Londons Roman past and is now a wide bustling street full of offices, shops and restaurants. Just east of Basinghall Avenue is Moorgate EC2. Hosting an underground and train station; part of London Metropolitan University; the modern building ‘Moorhouse; and many shops and restaurants including Wagamamas and Pret a Manger, Moorgate is a central street in the City. North of Basinghall Avenue lies the vast Barbican Estate: London’s famous post-war housing estate and community raised above the ground, and the Barbican Centre for Arts and Conferences: a unique cultural centre featuring film, art and music.
Basinghall Avenue lies between Moorgate tube station and Bank tube station. Moorgate tube station is positioned between Moorgate and Moorfields EC2 and has the Hammersmith & City line; Central line; Metropolitan line and Northern line. National Rail trains also use Moorgate as a stop. Bank tube station is officially located on King William Street EC4 and the station can be easily accessed from opposite streets: Lombard Street EC3; Cornhill EC3; Threadneedle Street EC2; Princes Street EC2; and Poultry EC2. The Central line; Northern line and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) run through Bank. Bank tube station is interlinked with Monument tube station and the connecting passages lie underneath King William Street. Monument is a District and Circle line stop. Bank is named after the nearby Bank of England and is a highly appropriate name given the nearby Stock Exchange. The name Monument comes from the Monument commemorating the Great Fire of London.
