Battersea Power station - an iconic landmark

Battersea sits in the London borough of Wandsworth, close to Clapham and Queenstown Road. The area encompasses Battersea Park, Clapham Junction, Queenstown Road and Wandsworth Road rail stations, so it enjoys good transport links to central London and major transport hubs.

Although the area was formerly known for its slums and cramped living conditions, which were a result of overcrowding during the Industrial Age, many celebrities, including Joely Richardson, Dannii Minogue and Gordon Ramsey, now know Clapham as a desirable residence and home. The area does have some notoriety, Great Train Robbery thief Ronnie Biggs used to call the area home and the area has experienced problems with drug gangs, but gentrification, rising house prices and the introduction of zero-tolerance 'drug exclusion zones' have meant that the area is a much safer place to stay.

As with many of the areas surrounding London, Battersea was originally used for farmland, but changed dramatically with the introduction of a rail line in 1871. From a population of just 6,000 in 1840, Battersea boomed with an influx of new residents, numbering 168,000 in 1910. To cope with the new inhabitants, slums were erected, some of which still house Battersea residents today. These buildings may not have been the prettiest, but they give Battersea a certain Victorian charm and place it as an area of historical note.

Battersea contains many attractions, including the melancholy presence of Battersea Power Station, the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott coal-powered station, which was decommissioned in the 80s and is still in a state of disrepair aside from the odd open-air concert held inside.

There are many plans to turn it into entertainment complexes or flats, but so far no one has been able to raise the funding to do so. Battersea Dogs and Cats Home is London’s most famous refuge for stray dogs, financed by voluntary donations, its renown earns it a cool £12.2 million a year in funding, but with an army of staff and the care of over 9,000 animals a year to consider, it's a well deserved sum.

Battersea Park is a very peaceful place for a stroll, which contains a Peace Pagoda and a zoo, and host’s events throughout the year such as The Affordable Art Fair. The Battersea Arts Centre and New Covent Garden Market are both well worth a look, for up and coming painters and super fresh fruit and vegetables.

Battersea proper is a little light on nightlife and restaurants, although The Battersea Barge Bistro provides delicious waterside dining and there are several clubs in the area, which provide colourful nights out. However, areas nearby, such as Clapham and Wandsworth offer a wide range of restaurants, shops and unique boutiques, especially around the Northcote Road, so you can fulfill our shopping and clubbing needs.

Those who want to get in and out of London with ease, would do best to stay outside the centre of Battersea and stay in nearby Clapham, Wandsworth or near Chelsea Harbour, where you can find stylish and reasonable accommodation, which is convenient for visiting Battersea attractions, but far enough outside London to avoid prohibitive prices.
