Typical Shopping street in Belgravia

"Hotels in Belgravia, London"

Belgravia is proof that the old adage 'you are a reflection of the company you keep' is true; surrounded by Knightsbridge, Buckingham Palace and Sloane Street, it is breathtakingly expensive to live in, with house prices reaching up to £100 million, making Belgravia one of the most expensive places to live in the world. You may not b in the upper echelons of the super rich, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy this picturesque district and live vicariously by marvelling at the stunning mansions and sleek vintage cars along the streets.

That, of course, depends on whether you can actually find any residential properties. The prohibitive prices mean that foreign embassies, charity headquarters, professional institutions and businesses largely locate much of the area; however, you do still see the odd gentry household or investment banker browsing the many exquisite shops in the area. The area is largely unchanged since The Grosvenor family commissioned Thomas Cubitt to build the exclusive houses, sensing an opportunity after King George IV made Buckingham Palace his permanent residence and the streets are still lined with elegant Victorian town houses.

Shopping in the area is very exclusive and decadent; from Rococo, where you can find chocolate with curious flavourings such as orange and geranium and sea salt; to Poilane, where wealthy customers living abroad will charter planes to deliver their famous loaves each week; to famed French patisserie chef Pierre Hermes’ London store selling every flavour of macaroon you can imagine, plus some that you might not, including strawberry and balsamic vinegar, although sadly not his tomato ketchup one he invented for Heinz. There are also plenty of Michelin starred eateries in the area, tucked away in discrete locations to attract a private, moneyed clientele. You can find healthy 'Cuisine Naturelle' at Mosimann's, refined gastropub fare at The Pantechnicon, Italian fare at Apsley's with three Michelin stars and if your budget won't quite stretch to that, you can enjoy a delectable pastry at Patisserie Valerie or pasta at The Spaghetti House.

In Belgravia, you will see a number of historic sites, from Apsley House and Wellington Arch, where the Duke of Wellington lived, to Sloane Square, where Madonna owns properties, which was once a good spotting ground for 'Sloane Rangers', young people from wealthy families who favour the 'cardigan over the shoulder' look, but since the 80s the flaunting of wealth has been done in a slightly more discrete way. The area is also close to the museums of South Kensington, Knightsbridge shops, Harrods and Harvey Nichol's Department Store and about a 30 minute walk away from Hyde Park, so it is a great place to do some sight seeing from. However, whilst a hotel room is exponentially cheaper than putting down a mortgage, accommodation in the immediate area is exquisite but expensive, so unless you have a lot of cash to splash on a treat, a better option is to stay in South Kensington, which offers some great budget hotels of a high quality and mid-range and boutique hotels with a lot of character.

The area also has great transport links, with Victoria Station very close by, where you can catch the Gatwick Express Train, and Sloane Square tube station, which services the District and Circle lines, from which you have a direct link to Paddington Station (for the Heathrow Express Train) or King's Cross St Pancras Station, where the Eurostar terminus is located.
