St.Mary Le Bow Church. It is said if you are born within hearing of the St Mary Le Bow Church bells then you are a true cockney!

People often say that to be a true Cockney you need to be born within the sound of Bow Bells, meaning the bells at Bow Church in the heart of Bow in London’s East End. It is more likely that the saying originally referred to the bells of St Mary-le-Bow Church, in the City of London, but Bow is still considered to be a home of the London Cockney.

Bow has become associated with London’s E3 postcode district, which also covers Bromley-by-Bow, Old Ford, Mile End and Three Mills. The name Bow is an abbreviation of the medieval name Stratford-atte-Bow, with "Bow" being a 12th century bridge over the River Lea. Today, the bridge is a four-lane flyover, with the Lea and the Blackwall Tunnel approach underneath it. The Hertford Union Canal links the River Lee and the Regent's Canal, running along the south of Victoria Park. Bow is a residential area with a high street, businesses and a large supermarket. The area is well located, being close to the City of London, Dockland and Stratford in East London, which is the home of the Olympics site and the huge shopping centre Westfield Stratford City.

A local landmark is St Mary's Church, which stands on the traffic island in Bow Road. Part of the church dates to 1311. A statue of William Ewart Gladstone stands outside Bow Church. A memorial to George Lansbury (1859–1940) stands on the corner of Bow Road. Lansbury was twice Mayor of Poplar and also MP for Bromley and Bow. The original Poplar Town hall is on the south side of Bow Road, near the DLR station, and is a public hall. In 2000 and 2001 the Big Brother UK house of the popular TV series was located at Three Mills Studios in nearby Newham, often reported as Bow because the studios are in the E3 postal district.

Bow has an interesting history. It was on the route of a one of the first paved Roman roads in Britain, at a ford on the River Lea. In 1110 Matilda, wife of Henry I, reputedly fell at the ford on her way to Barking Abbey and ordered a bow-shaped bridge to be built. A chapel on the bridge was dedicated to St Katherine, and occupied by a hermit until the 15th century. Fairfield Road in Bow commemorates the Green Goose fair that was held there on the Thursday after Pentecost. A Green Goose was a young goose, but was also a slang term for a cuckold or a 'low' woman. The fair, which ran up until the mid-19th Century, became known for drunken and rowdy behaviour.

During the 17th century Bow became famous for fine porcelain, made using crushed animal bones from nearby butchers and slaughterhouses. The area was also the home of the Bryant and May match factory, which became famous in 1888 when match girls went on strike. This was a forerunner of the suffragette movement fight for women's rights and also the trade union movement. Sylvia Pankhurst’s East London Federation of Suffragettes was based at 198 Bow Road.

There is plenty to see and do around Bow including Brick Lane, which is famous for Asian restaurants and excellent nightlife. Other attractions include Spitalfields market, the Museum of Childhood, the Museum of London in Docklands, the Ragged School Museum, St Katharine Docks waterside development, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Petticoat Lane market and Whitechapel Art Gallery. Parks and open spaces nearby include Altab Ali Park, Bartlett Park, Langdon Park, Mile End Park, Mudchute and Victoria Park, which frequently hosts events and music festivals.

The nearest London Underground stations are Mile End, served by the Hammersmith & City, District and Central lines, and Bow Road, on the District and Hammersmith & City lines. They are in Travelcard Zone 2. The nearest Docklands Light Railway station is Bow Church, where you can also catch the No 8 bus. The area is outside the London Congestion Charge Zone for cars.

There are plenty of budget hotels in Bow, including the Kings Arms Guest House, which is a friendly bed and breakfast hotel.
