Hotels in Brent Cross, London
Brent Cross is situated in north London, atop the River Brent, from which it takes its name. Originally farmland, in the 19th century, the area was developed when a sewage works was installed there, although this may not be the best thing to judge the area on. Although it is situated near attractive residential districts of London, such as Golders Green and Hendon, Brent Cross is more industrial and doesn't share the same elegant Victorian buildings the surrounding areas have. It is largely renowned for its huge shopping centre, which attracts visitors from all over London.
When Brent Cross shopping centre first opened in 1976, it had the attractive reputation of being one of the first stand-alone shopping centres in the UK, containing John Lewis and Fenwicks Department Stores. Today it has over 120 shops and an 8,000 capacity free car park, so it is still a very popular place to shop. Since its construction it has been bested by Lakeside and Bluewater, and more recently Westfield Shopping Centres in east and west London, however it draws the most income per year out of all these complexes, so it must be doing something right, perhaps punters just love a free place to put their car. The centre also has a programme of events throughout the year, involving the complex's shops and businesses, so it is a bit livelier and hands on than some of London's shopping centres. Aside from the major department stores, Brent Cross includes supermarkets such as Waitrose, a large Marks and Spencers, H&M for cheap and cheerful fashion and Boots for all your beauty and pampering needs.
The best place to eat in Brent Cross is also at the shopping centre, which has a wide range of eateries to suit any tastes, including chains such as Nandos and Pizza Express, cafes and snack bars and a range of places where you can enjoy a three course meal, such as Baja California and Joe Delucci's.
For those who don't fancy shopping there isn't much else that the area offers, although the government do have a plan to regenerate the surrounding area and make it more 'pedestrian friendly', which involves building more residential blocks, offices and parks, so the face of Brent Cross should change drastically in the coming years. The area is close to Hendon, which has a lovely park and a selection of cosy pubs and eateries.
Brent Cross does enjoy good transport links, so for those who want to experience one of London's oldest malls, the Northern Line can access it. Brent Cross tube station is just 15 minutes outside of central London, so you can easily visit in a day. Hotels in the area are scarce and unless you want to spend the whole time shopping you may prefer to stay somewhere with a bit more going on. Camden, on the Northern Line has a selection of cheap hotels and Brent Cross can be reached quickly from Camden Town tube, so may be a better option, with a much more exciting nightlife.
