Brent Cross shopping centre has recently been usurped by the larger, flashier Westfield Shopping centre in the more central, London location of White City, but this north London shopping centre is still a popular destination for shopaholics, who don't mind making the journey to the upper end of the Northern line to splash some cash. In fact, the centre still has one of the largest incomes per unit area of retail space in the UK, more than Bluewater, Lakeside and Westfield London.
The centre first opened in 1976 as the first stand-alone mall in the UK, which was based on an American model. The Brent Cross Shopping Centre has since expanded in 1995, when more shops and a larger car park were added. This was a real bonus for customers, as the centre is conveniently placed for driving, close to the North Circular road and the M1, and the centre offers 8,000 parking spaces to shoppers for no charge. There is also a tube station, located just a 6-minute walk away and can be reached on public transport. Admittedly the Brent Cross area isn’t as pedestrian friendly as many other London areas, but it is currently being re-assessed by the government, who want to make the centre easier to reach.
The centre contains over 120 stores, including large, well-stocked department stores such as John Lewis and Fenwick, and a large Marks and Spencer. Boots, H&M clothing, Waitrose, WH Smith, Jaeger, Karen Millen, Whistles, Monsoon, an Apple Store, a range of phone shops, hairdressers such as Toni & Guy, opticians and these are just a few of the high street and designer shops visitors can explore there. Brent Cross Shopping Centre also has a varied selection of restaurants, serving food from around the world at restaurants such as Nando's, Baja California and Carluccio's, and snack bars such as The Houmous Bar and Pret a Manger; the perfect place to meet with friends, or relax after trawling the shops.
Brent Cross Shopping Centre also offers a personal shopping service, to help you navigate the many shops and choose the perfect outfit or gift; store specific gift cards and the centre also holds events throughout the year, such as art exhibitions, store collection launches and children's entertainment to keep your little ones entertained as you explore. Recent events included a stage show of popular children’s show ‘In The Midnight Garden’ and an exhibition of paintings by artists and musician Rolf Harris. With this much to see and do, it's no surprise that the store is such a success still. If you want to stay near the centre, the Holiday Inn Brent Cross offers very reasonable accommodation, and The Hide in nearby Hendon offers chic, stylish rooms and a delectable breakfast. The Best Western Palm Hotel is also a good option, close to the M11 but with peaceful rooms.
