British Library

The functional, modern building of the British Library may not have the baroque styling of the epic Sansovino Library in Venice, or the instant wow-factor of Amsterdam's enormous Rijksmuseum Library, but it is an impressive and respected institution of itself, with a long-standing reputation that transcends showy decor. The British Library is located just a 5-minute walk from King's Cross St Pancras Station, home of the Eurostar terminus, occupying a sprawling site, which contains over 150 million artifacts, including a copy of every publication produced in England and Ireland.

"The collection includes the Magna Carta and Leonardo Da Vinci's notebook"

Suffice to say, it's impossible to explore the Library in just one day and many scholars spend years poring over the texts in this British institution. However, you can see the highlights of the Library's collection, which include precious historic documents such as the Magna Carta, an important 13th century charter; The Lindisfarne Gospels, which were painstakingly illustrated by monks; Beatles’ song sheets; the recording of Nelson Mandela’s Rivonia trial speech; and Leonardo Da Vinci's notebook, where you can see the backwards handwriting Da Vinci used to keep his ideas secret from prying eyes. Unsurprisingly, none of these books can be checked out for perusal in the comfort of your own home, but it is a wonderful opportunity to see the editions that shaped our understanding of international history. The Library also has over 400,000 visitors a year, including many academics, writers and specialists who require rare tomes.

"Curious objects such as Chinese oracle bones"

The collection in the library is breathtaking, spanning patents, stamps, newspapers, journals, manuscripts, song sheets, maps, an extensive sound archive and curious ephemera such as Chinese oracle bones, which are over 3,000 years old. These items alone make the Library a fascinating place to visit during your stay, but the Library also holds a full programme of events throughout the year, including talks from well-known authors, art exhibitions, debates and discussions and poetry readings, so it is worth checking to see what's on before you arrive.

"Close to King's Cross St Pancras Station and The British Museum"

The Library was originally part of the British Museum until 1973, when the building it resides in now was erected in St Pancras. It was the largest structure built in London in the 20th century and there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, including a cafe, shop and a courtyard where you can see students enjoying coffee on a sunny day. Even if you are something of a bibliophobe, the library is a must see during your trip. The Library's proximity to the Eurostar terminal and The British Museum, as well as the nightlife of King's Cross and shops of Angel, mean that you can explore the best of north London, and there are also plenty of hotels catering for a variety of budgets close by. The Holiday Inn King's Cross offers comfortable accommodation at affordable rates. Hotel Megaro offers stylish, cosy, boutique-style rooms. Generator is a lively, low-cost hostel with a bright and cheery atmosphere, perfect for visiting students, and SACO London offers trendy, luxury apartments for those who want a more secluded place to stay.
