British Museum

Nestling in leafy Bloomsbury, the British Museum, London has a collection of more than 7 million objects, and is certain to contain something to fascinate everyone. It welcomes more than 6 million visitors a year through its doors, and continues to provide an insight into the human history and culture.

The British Museum is convenient to get to, as it is accessible from almost anywhere in the centre of the city. The nearest tube station is Tottenham Court Road, but Holborn and Goodge Street are both within easy walking distance, meaning that you can get there from the Central, Piccadilly, and Northern Lines. If you are taking the bus, you will need a number 7 to take you directly to the British Museum. Alternatively, there are many which stop on Great Russell Street, Museum Street, and Tottenham Court Road, from all of which the museum is just a short walk.

St Giles Hotel near the British Museum

The Museum was started after naturalist and collector of oddities Sir Hand Sloane died in 1753, and, not wishing to see his collection broken up, he bequeathed it to King George II for the benefit of the public. At the time, there were 71,000 objects in the collection including 40,000 printed books, 7,000 manuscripts, and 337 volumes of dried plants, prints and drawings, including those of Albrecht Durer. On this basis, George II started the Museum in June 1753 in Montagu House.

As time passed, the Museum amassed collections from the voyages on James Cook, as well as its many objects from Egyptian and classical history which became much more popular in the nineteenth century. In 1840 the Museum started the first of its overseas excavations, and a number of legacies and bequests, and a continuing programme of acquisition have led the museum to have the impressive collection of priceless and irreplaceable objects form all periods of human history that it does today.

The Museum has a number of departments, including some for: Ancient Egypt; Ancient Greece and Rome; the Middle East; Asia; prints and drawings; Africa, Oceania and the Americas; Coins and , Medals; Prehistory and Europe; Conservation and scientific research and the museums libraries and archives. Contained within these are some of the most spectacular and important exhibits held by any museum in the world.

It is here that you can see the Elgin marbles, the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies, the Benin Bronzes, the Sutton Hoo treasure, the Lewis chessmen, the bust of Rameses II, and bas-reliefs from Nineveh. The collection of coins has more than 1,000,000 exhibits which cover the whole history of coinage from 7,000 BC to the present day. Although controversy rages over whether or not these objects should be returned to the countries in which they were found, whilst they all remain in the British Museum it remains an unrivalled collection of objects from the history of mankind. Anyone with any interest in history or culture should make time in their itinerary for a visit to the British Museum, where you can see unique and important objects.
