London's ethnically diverse community has made the city into a cultural melting pot, with a fascinating mix of cuisine, art, music and religion, which varies wildly from district to district. However, this is nowhere felt more keenly than in the Brixton area of London, where the postwar Windrush immigrants settled in the mid 20th century. As a result, Brixton was the birthplace of British reggae music and strong West Indian and Caribbean communities are predominant in the area today. The area also has some of the best and most authentic Caribbean cuisine this side of the Atlantic, and Brixton market is now a London institution for its exotic mix of flavours and rare ingredients.
The market is held under the original decorative canopies, which were built in the 1920s and 1930s and whilst food is the main focus of the market, visitors can also enjoy world music, street performers, events such as Bake Offs and swing dancing competitions, vintage clothing stalls, craft stalls and much more. The market only runs on Fridays and Saturdays, but a lot is packed in to those two days!
The food market, held on a Friday is the best place in London to find ingredients from all over the world alongside a range of artisan products, such as cured meats and cheese, homemade cakes, gluten-free goodies, fresh breads, handmade chocolates and cooking demonstrations as well as plenty of street food stalls, selling everything from Jamaican jerk chicken to traditional Spanish paella. It's a taste sensation you won't want to miss.
Brixton flea market offers second hand trinkets ranging from the curious to the exquisite. You may have to spend some time digging around, but this is a great place to find some unusual souvenirs to take home. Brixton Makers Market combines food and crafting to bring you the best of the local community's wares. From jewellery to skincare products, homemade cupcakes to original paintings, you'll be amazed at the wealth of talent Londoners have. Brixton Retro & Vintage Market offers an eclectic mix of clothing and accessories from bygone days.
London may be filled to the brim with cafes and shops, but you won't find anything quite so unique as Brixton Market elsewhere in the city, which is why it has such a long-standing reputation. So come on down and try some of the most delectable dishes around.
If you want to stay in the area, there are plenty of hotels situated within walking distance of the market. The O2 Brixton Academy is also close by for gigs by up and coming and established bands, so there is plenty to see and do in the area. The Park Plaza Riverbank London offers riverside views and achingly stylish rooms, just a 15-minute walk away from Brixton. Peckham Lodge offers low-cost rooms in a lively area of the city, just a short bus ride from Brixton. Dolphin House offers chic rooms and a stunning garden in Victoria, just a few stops from Brixton on the Victoria tube line and the Sidney Hotel London Victoria offers comfortable 4-star accommodation in a convenient area of London for walking to main sights and attractions and travel to Gatwick Airport from Victoria Station.
