"Hotels in and around Brompton, London"
Brompton, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, was renowned as an enclave of artists and writers in the 19th century before rising rents in Belgravia made the area more expensive and pushed the arts scene further north and east.
Nowadays, it still retains an artistic vibe and it may be less well heeled and thankfully less expensive than its neighbouring areas of Chelsea, Knightsbridge and Kensington, but this only adds to its bohemian charm. Due to its very fortuitous location, with many sights, attractions and landmarks nearby, it is a fantastic place to stay and explore.
Although Brompton can't offer visitors the museums of Kensington and the shops of Chelsea, it does have some charming and intriguing spots of its own, most notable of which is Brompton Cemetery, which is almost as renowned as Highgate cemetery for its famous residents.
Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was buried there after she famously threw herself under the King's horse; Sir Thomas Spencer Wells, a surgeon to Queen Victoria who was once suspected to be Jack the Ripper; singer-songwriter Tim Rose; explorer Samuel Baker; and John Snow, who first surmised the link between cholera and dirty water are all interred there and there are some ornate graves and architectural features to see. Beatrix Potter, who was once a resident in the area, named many of the characters in her famous animal characters from the tombstones, which offers a darker edge to her children's series, and the area is also a popular, if grim, cruising ground for local gay men. The cemetery’s less salacious include being used as a backdrop fro many films including Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises.
You will also find the Brompton Oratory and Holy Trinity Brompton Church nearby, the former a stunning example of Italianate Renaissance architecture, and the latter a quaint, if slightly happy-clappy place of worship, and the Royal Brompton Hospital.
The Old Brompton Road offers some fantastic shops, including Gilding the Lily, one of London's most renowned florists and the area's proximity to Knightsbridge, Kensington and the King's Road mean that you can shop until you drop at exclusive stores such as Harrods and Harvey Nichols Department Stores. South Kensington is also very close by, where you can visit the Victoria & Albert, Science and Natural History Museums; the Royal Albert Hall; Hyde Park; and Kensington Palace and Gardens. From Brompton you can also easily reach Earls Court and Olympia Exhibition Centres, where you can see some fantastic exhibitions, concerts and trade shows, such as The Royal Tournament and The Ideal Home Show.
Along Old Brompton Road, you will find South Kensington Tube Station, which offers fantastic transport links to Victoria Station (where you can catch the Gatwick Express Train); Paddington Station (where you can catch the Heathrow Express Train); King's Cross St Pancras (where the Eurostar terminus is located); and many other areas of central London, via the Circle and District Lines. Hotels in the area range from the formidably expensive and chic to low-cost tourist-class hotels of surprisingly good quality, so the area is suitable for budget travellers and those who want to splurge as well as families and business travellers.
