"In excess of 50,000 people visit Buckingham Palace annually as The Queen's guests"

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II when she is in London. Without a doubt, this is one of the most exclusive properties in London, and its impressive stature means that it is largely used for state visits and tours. The Queen's apartments within the palace are fairly modest by comparison and allow the royals to live in undisturbed luxury with a full waiting staff of 450 people and a private cinema.

"Buckingham Palace was originally a mulberry garden planted by King James I (r. 1603-25) as a silkworm farm"

Buckingham Palace was originally built for the Duke of Buckingham as Buckingham House in 1705. The house first passed into royal hands in 1761 when King George III bought it for Queen Charlotte and dubbed it 'The Queen's House'. The building was made into the austere structure it is today by famed London architects John Nash and Edward Blore, who expanded the residence to accommodate Queen Victoria, who decreed that the house was now the official royal residence in London.

"Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms of which 188 are staff bedrooms"

As the residence of the monarchy, Buckingham Palace has come under threat on several occasions. It was heavily attacked in World Wars I and II, and was bombed no less than seven times in the Second World War. It has also been subject to break ins, by the enigmatic boy Edward Jones on three occasions (as recorded by Charles Dickens) and Michael Fagan, whom the Queen found smoking a cigarette in her bedroom.

In more recent years, TV personality Denise Van Outen was also heavily criticized for stealing a silver tissue box when visiting the palace. With these security breaches in mind, there was much debate about opening up the palace to the public. Queen Anne's Gallery, which houses the royal art collection had been opened to the public at an earlier date with much success and allowing visitors to the palace for a limited time allowed the royal family to pay for the palaces costly upkeep. With the largest private garden in London and over 50,000 invited guests to entertain every year, its not surprising that the family could use a little extra cash.

"Tunnels connect Buckingham Palace to Clarence House and the Houses of Parliament"

The Palace is currently only open to visitors for two months of the year, August and September, when the Queen is away at her Balmoral estate; however, if you wish to visit off-peak, you won't be disappointed, as the traditional Changing of the guard ceremony is carried out daily. Or if you are arriving in June you may witness the Trooping of the Colour ceremony, which marks the Queen's birthday celebrations, so you may see her majesty waving from the balcony. Or you can simply take a long look at the grand facade and visit Sir Thomas Brock's gilded Victoria Memorial.

Visiting the palace couldn't be easier, with Hyde Park Corner tube just a few minutes walk away, which services the Piccadilly line, which goes direct to King's Cross St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminates); and offers a direct link to Heathrow Airport.
