Camden Town

Camden is without a doubt, one of London's most colourful areas, from the moment you step out of the tube station you will see a motley crew of punks, Goths, skater kids, cyber punks, hipsters and pretty much any genre of alt culture you can think of. It may have changed drastically over the years as it has gradually become a much more desirable place to live, the more grizzled members of the punk scene there have been ousted out in Hackney and Dalston and there are more high street chain stores since the main market gained a mall-type structure, but it seems that Camden will always have its rebellious core.

Camden market is one of the most intriguing and often surprising places to visit in London, sprawling about the side streets and along Camden lock, here you can buy some very unique souvenirs, from glow in the dark corsets and huge studded boots, to handmade jewellery, vintage furniture and every humourous t-shirt known to man. If you so wish, you can also get piercings and tattoos from the many parlours, which line the high street, as you may feel out of place without one. Many of the shops are filled with cheap and tatty accessories, but these seem to fit rather well with the Camden aesthetic, with its artistic, bohemian vibe.

Camden is also renowned for its music scene, with legendary gig venues such as KOKO; Proud Galleries, a former stables; The World's End pub, where you are likely to see bands relaxing with a pint after a show; The Blues Bar for sultry jazz nights; Electric Ballroom, which also hosts well-attended club nights; Lock 17; The Barfly and The Underworld, all of Camden's pubs have a slight dive-y quality to them, but you'll find an enthusiastic, trendy crowd and you might discover some up and coming musicians. You will even see many fashionable youths wandering around with guitar cases and before her tragic death, Amy Winehouse used to own a house in the area. Camden also has a few small theatre venues hidden away in local pubs, so it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled for a new show.

Camden isn't all about the rock and roll; Camden Lock is a very pleasant river walk, where you can see canal boats sailing up and down and from which you can reach Regent's Park and London Zoo. Camden is also just a stones throw away from Primrose Hill, one of the most affluent areas of London, where the multi-coloured skate shops and noisy takeaways give way to elegant mansions and refined bars and cafes. Eating in Camden, by contrast, is largely an al fresco affair and the market takeaway stalls serve food of all varieties for reasonable prices with enormous portions, although Camden also has a great selection of chain restaurants and vegetarian cafes as well as Shaka Zulu, an elaborate African themed restaurant with a large cocktail menu.

Camden Photo galleryCamden also has great transport connections, although the tube station does tend to get very busy at weekends and has a slightly confusing 'one way in, one way out' entry system. Camden connects the east and west branches of the Northern Line, so you can explore many more of London's sights and attractions with ease. You can also travel directly to major transport hubs Waterloo Station and King's Cross St Pancras Station, where the Eurostar terminus is located. Hotels in Camden range from large chain hotels to the odd boutique hotel and budget accommodation of varying quality, so if you want to stay in this fascinating area, you can do it on any budget.
