OVERLOOKING TRAFALGAR SQUARE
The Grand at Trafalgar Square -  a luxurious boutique hotel surrounded by numerous attractions

Hotels in Charing Cross London

Charing Cross is officially recognised as the most central point in London and while there may be some give or take there, it is truly at the heart of the city and located near to a vast amount of attractions, sights and landmarks.

Charing Cross denotes the intersection between The Strand and Trafalgar Square and although it is a bustling urban throughway today, it has seen a great deal more excitement in the past. The site of battles, attempts to overtake Queen Mary I with Lady Jane Grey, Regicides and the site of almshouses for so called 'aliens' in a much less enlightened London; nowadays, aside from the odd Anti-War or University fees protest gathered round Trafalgar Square, the area is a very pleasant place to visit and a hotspot for tourists.

Almost all of London's major sights are in walking distance of Charing Cross, so if you are staying nearby you will be spoilt for choice, and you may find you don't even need to set foot on a tube train throughout your stay.

To the East you will find The Strand a long road with many shops, chain restaurants, historic pubs and hotels, which marks the start of London's Theatreland District, with the Adelphi, The Lyceum and more. From the Strand you can access Covent Garden, London's original market district, which has a long-standing reputation for its theatrical prowess.

Here you will find many more theatres in the warren of small streets; St Paul's Church, which has gained the moniker The Actor's Church due to the many memorials to great thespians within; many street performers vying for your attention and money; and although the fruit and vegetable market has long since moved out of the area, Covent Garden is still a thriving centre of commerce, with quirky boutiques, high street and designer shops and the odd market stall selling artisanal wares.

North of Charing Cross you will find Shaftesbury Avenue and Seven Dials, both of which have great restaurants and pubs and, of course, more theatres, where some of London's biggest musicals are shown, such as Les Miserables. You will also find Leicester Square, where some of the biggest cinemas in Europe are located.

Film premieres for large releases are held here, including Harry Potter and the Star Wars franchise, so it is usually filled with hordes of fans.

Leicester Square also contains some very exclusive nightclubs, so whether on or off the red carpet, you can spot some well heeled revellers. Beyond the square you will find Soho, a vibrant district where London's thriving gay scene proliferates and some bijou cafes and chic bars are also located here, as well as anomalies like Garlic and Shots, where all the food is flavoured with, well, garlic for a homogenous taste sensation.

To the West of Charing Cross you will come across the grand surrounds of Trafalgar Square, where The National Gallery is located and The National Portrait Gallery just around the corner. Flanked by ornate buildings containing embassies and exhibitions; and decorated with elegant fountains and statues, Trafalgar Square is one of the most recognisable locations in London, where you will find Nelson's column, the ever changing, and often baffling Fourth Plinth, and huge lions guarding the fountains, which offer great picture opportunities.

Named after Britain's greatest military victory and a testament to Britain's past might; it is now better known for open air concerts, protests and street fairs, especially now that the pigeons have been cleared out.

To the south of Charing Cross, over Westminster Bridge, you will reach the delightful South Bank area, where there are excellent exhibition centres such as The Royal Festival Hall, The Southbank Centre, The British Film Institute and The National Theatre and some great activities for families, including The London Eye and The London Aquarium. The area is also great for views of the Thames and after a hard day's sight seeing, you can relax with a picnic in Jubilee Gardens.

Whilst Charing Cross itself may not be much more than a marker of the true centre of London, it is the gateway to the city's best and brightest locales. As such, hotels in the area are often very pricey, but for the location it's worth splashing out, especially as many hotels around here can be very stylish, with top-notch service.

If you really do need to stick to a budget, reasonable options can be found in The Strand, and there are more budget hotels situated in Elephant & Castle or Waterloo, which are just a few tube stops away. Transport links from Charing Cross Station are very good, with overground links to the rest of the UK and access to the Northern Line and Bakerloo Line, which will take you to Paddington Station, where the Heathrow Express terminates and many other areas of central London.
