ABOUT CHELSEA HOUSE HOTEL:
The Earls Court area of southwest London is renowned for its low-cost accommodation. The area isn't quite as well heeled as it's affluent neighbouring districts of Knightsbridge and Kensington, but the area isn't without its charms, with streets lined with Victorian town houses, interspersed with leafy garden squares. The same goes for many of the hotels in the area, the accommodation may be basic, but with major sights and attractions nearby and very affordable rates, you will be willing to overlook any minor annoyances. In this spirit, the Chelsea House Hotel, located just minutes from Earls Court exhibition centre, makes a reasonable choice for business and leisure travellers on a budget.
The hotel offers guest rooms from Single to Quad sizes, decorated in a simple, minimalist style, with comfortable beds and a handy range of amenities to see you through your stay. These include Hotel Chelsea complimentary toiletries, a colour television, refrigerators, tea and coffee making facilities if needed, a hair dryer on request, en-suite bathrooms and a free Wi-Fi connection; a real plus as many four and five-star establishments charge for this service.
The hotel also offers a range of extra services such as luggage storage, a 24-hour reception, travel and city information and paid parking for a few cars. A continental breakfast is also included in the room rate, but according to previous guests, isn't worth writing home about, so you may prefer to sample some of the cafes in the area. Starbucks, Prêt A Manger and Giraffe all offer reliably tasty fare for a reasonable price. The hotel doesn't cater for evening meals, so you may wish to sample some of the area's more substantial culinary delights too. Mr Wing, for Chinese street food, Friends for Italian dishes and Aubergine for a Modern European menu are just some of the excellent places to grab a bite.
The Chelsea House Hotel's trump feature is its excellent location, which is convenient for the sights of Earls Court and South Kensington beyond. Nearby, you will find the Troubadour Cafe, former haunt of hell raising actor Oliver Reed; The Finborough Theatre, where you can see plays by up and coming scribes; and Stamford Bridge Stadium, home to Chelsea Football Club, and the spiritual home of many a football fan. Just one tube stop away from Earls Court tube station, you will find Olympia exhibition centre, which is the older of the two centres, where you can see spectacular shows and trade fairs, including the London International Horse Show and Crufts Dog Show.
Shopping enthusiasts will be thrilled to find the excusive shops of Chelsea's King's Road just a few minutes walk away, leading down to the elegant Sloane Square area, where you will find The Saatchi modern art gallery and Royal Hospital Chelsea, where the Chelsea Flower Show is held annually. From Chelsea, you are just a few minutes walk from the highly affluent Knightsbridge district of London, where you can find the one and only Harrods Department Store, for an 'out of this world' retail experience. Beyond Knightsbridge, in the South Kensington district, you will find the Victoria & Albert, Science and Natural History Museums; the Royal Albert Hall; Hyde Park; and Kensington Palace and Gardens, alongside a fantastic selection of shops, cafes, pubs and bars to explore.
The Chelsea House Hotel's interior may not quite live up to the attractive Victorian facade of the building, with some guests even recommending 'travel sheets' for your stay, but if you are looking for somewhere to simply rest your head and store your luggage as you explore the city, this will suit you just fine. If you choose to stay here, basement rooms tend to be larger, but slightly darker than rooms on the upper floors, however, there is no lift in the hotel, so a large basement room may suit guests with mobility problems or guests with heavy suitcases better.
