Originally a sleepy fishing village in the west of London, which had its industry almost literally flushed down the toilet after Thomas Crapper’s invention polluted the waterways. Chiswick has since been swallowed up by London expansion, but only became an official part of Greater London in 1965, so it is a fairly new addition to the city. As such, Chiswick is still situated close to many areas of parkland and wildlife sanctuaries such as the London Wetlands Centre, which houses many exotic species of bird and Kew Gardens, where you can see some very unseasonable fruits such as bananas and coconuts in the Palm House, or be awestruck by the huge lily pads in the Waterlily House. A smaller park, Turnham Green, is also nearby, which contains a war memorial, which commemorates those lost in the very heavy bombing Chiswick endured.
Despite being ravaged by the wars, Chiswick remains a pleasant and picturesque place to visit, with elegant Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian houses lining the streets. Perhaps the most notable architecture in the area is 18th century Chiswick House, a stunning white manor designed by Lord Burlington in a Roman style, with Italianate gardens, which are perfect for a picnic on a summers day. You can also take tours of the house, which has sumptuous interiors.
If you are more interested in tracking down a good pint rather than learning the history of the area, you are in the best place to do so as Chiswick s home to Fullers Brewery, which has been producing ales in the area for over 350 years and is the UK's largest independent brewery. You can take tours of the facility and watch how the product goes from hops to being poured from the tap of local pubs. Chiswick also has many quaint Victorian pubs in the area such as The Roebuck and The Old Pack Horse. Chiswick also has a good selection of restaurants, from chains such as Pizza Express and Nando's, to fine dining at La Trompette and Sam's Brasserie.
Chiswick isn't known for its shops, but there are a few independent stores along the high street, where you can pick up some unique souvenirs, however, despite its proximity to London, Chiswick feels much more like a village and is smaller and less vibrant than areas near the centre. However, it is perfect for those who want to visit London, but prefer to stay in a quiet enclave where they can escape from the crowds and enjoy some of England's greener pastures. Chiswick is situated on the District line, which will take you to Victoria station in 30 minutes, where you can catch the Gatwick Express Train and it is one stop away from Acton, where you can catch the Piccadilly line to Heathrow Airport.
The area is very affluent, with a rowing club and rugby club and celebrity residents such as Ant and Dec and Colin Firth, who must be aware of the irony of his Jane Austen style surroundings. Hotels in Chiswick tend to be cheaper than in the centre of London, although those who want to experience Chiswick but make the most of London nightlife should stay in nearby Earls Court or Hammersmith.
