The Chiswick Lodge Hotel, which offers budget accommodation, is in the West London suburb of Chiswick, some five miles from central London. This property is set above a parade of shops on a busy road, with the hotel entrance up an alley way which also houses the entrance to Turnham Green underground station. This proximity to the station means that some of the hotel rooms are subject to noise from the railway. Although it’s part of the underground system’s District Line, the railway runs above ground at this point. On the positive side, being so near a station means that you can reach central London in as little as 20 minutes.
Chiswick Lodge Hotel, which is just across the road from the green spaces of Chiswick Common, has nine guestrooms with ensuite showers. Amenities include tea and coffee making facilities and TVs. Rooms have basic furnishings and simple décor and rates include a continental breakfast.
Although the Chiswick Lodge only serves breakfast, you’ll find plenty of good restaurants within easy walking distance. Cote is a stylish restaurant just about 100 metres from the hotel. It serves a bistro menu with French and Mediterranean specialities like moules marinières, beef bourguignon and linguine with seafood. Try a traditional French dessert of crème brûlée.
The Tabard, an authentic London pub dating from 1880, is a couple of minutes' walk around the corner from the hotel on Bath Road. The menu there includes a range of English pub favourites such as bangers (sausages) and mash, steak and ale pie, and fish and chips with mushy peas. The Tabard serves a choice of traditionally brewed beer and the pub even has its own theatre which stages drama and comedy gigs.
The Chiswick Lodge Hotel is just a 15-minute walk from a particularly picturesque section of the River Thames. Walk down to Chiswick Mall, where a row of pretty houses, some dating from the 18th century, overlooks the river. At the eastern end of the Mall you’ll find the Black Lion pub which has a spacious garden and serves food and real ales.
Turnham Green Station, on London Underground’s District Line, is right on the hotel’s doorstep. In fact, this station is also on the Piccadilly Line, but most of those trains don’t stop at Turnham Green. Fortunately, all District Line trains do stop there, and you can easily transfer to the Piccadilly Line three stops away at Hammersmith Station.
The journey time on the District Line to South Kensington Station is 20 minutes. This station is right in London’s Museum Quarter and it’s just a few minutes walk to the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Entrance to all of these splendid institutions is free. You can also walk from South Kensington to Kensington Gardens and the adjoining Hyde Park in less than 15 minutes.
Take the District Line eastwards from Turnham Green to Hammersmith and change there for the Piccadilly Line, and you’ll be in Piccadilly Circus, right in the heart of London, in 25 minutes. From there, you can walk to Trafalgar Square, Oxford Circus and Shaftesbury Avenue, home to many of London’s theatres.
You can also take the District Line heading away from the centre of town to reach Richmond Station in 10 minutes. The town of Richmond is set on the south bank of the Thames and this prosperous area, in truth now really part of London, has an excellent selection of shops, restaurants and entertainment. Take a walk up Richmond Hill for some of the most famous views of London, looking across the River Thames. Stop for a well-earned drink at the top of the hill at the Roebuck pub.
