Clapham is a curious area of London, where you can almost see the path of gentrification when you come out of Clapham Junction Rail Station. From St John's Hill, where you will find budget supermarket Lidl and TK Maxx, walking along to Northcote Road, where hordes of 'yummy mummies' brunch with kids and Chihuahuas in tow, you will gradually find Waitrose and Marks and Spencers and finally artisan bakeries and delicatessens as the area gets more and more affluent. However, with gorgeous green space Clapham Common; increasingly trendy bars, pubs and restaurants; and rows of picturesque Victorian terrace houses, which sell at sky-high prices, Clapham is largely considered a very upmarket area to live.
Clapham Junction station is also a big draw, as one of the biggest and busiest transport hubs in London, you can reach many other parts of London, the suburbs and beyond from the station and it can become very crowded during rush hour. Just a few minutes away from Waterloo and with connections to Victoria Station, where you can catch the Gatwick Express Train; Richmond, which is a very pretty place to have a drink alongside the Thames; and Wimbledon, where you can watch the tennis, this is perhaps the best-connected station in London aside from King's Cross St Pancras.
Clapham is also home to three tube stations, Clapham Common, Clapham North and Clapham South, all of which are located on the Northern Line, from which you can access King's Cross St Pancras Station for travel on the Eurostar.
Clapham encompasses a huge area of south London and all these stations are situated quite far apart, but each area of Clapham has a distinct feel and is worth visiting for the many fantastic bars, restaurants, shops and clubs there.
Clapham High Street and Northcote Road are some of the best shopping thoroughfares in the area, with genteel vintage stores, boutique furniture designers, artisan food stores and a range of high street and designer shops, any shopaholics will be able to indulge themselves of an afternoon. You will also find some fantastic cafes along here and even a pop-up doggy diner, which goes to show just how affluent the area is. Clapham also has many affordable chain restaurants, such as Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Strada for those sticking to a budget.
Clapham has some very vibrant nightlife, with cocktail bars, traditional pubs and clubs such as The Loft, The White House and Lost Society, which cater for a well-heeled clientele. The Clapham Grand is a stunning Victorian theatre, which showcases plays, art exhibitions, comedy and club nights and if that's all a bit too energetic for you, you can visit Clapham Picture house, where you can watch arthouse and foreign films in a historic setting.
Clapham is also well located for visiting the O2 Brixton Academy and Battersea, where you will find the Dogs and Cats Home and you can see the austere, derelict shell of the Battersea Power Station, which occasionally hosts events and concerts. Clapham also has a good range of hotels catering for different budgets, and with such fantastic rail links and exciting ways to spend your evenings; it truly is a fantastic place to stay.
