An ancient Egyptian obelisk is probably the last thing you'd expect to stumble upon in London, but this is a city full of surprises and random curiosities hidden round every corner, from a church containing an axe which Genghis Khan used to kill a thousand virgins, to a pub where a heartbroken landlord refused to wash after his fiancée died on their wedding day. So even though London and Luxor are as different as chalk and cheese, ancient history enthusiasts can kill two birds with one stone when sightseeing and visit Cleopatra's Needle on the Victoria Embankment.

Unlike some historic artifacts you'll find in London museums, the needle was actually presented as a gift to Britain, by the Victorian ruler of Egypt and Sudan in 1819, rather than being 'acquired' by intrepid explorers. This preceded the 1922 discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen, when Egypt mania gripped Britain, but the Victorian era was also an age of discovery, so the gift was undoubtedly well received and a popular tourist attraction.

Rising 28 metres into the London skyline and looking out over the Thames, the Needle is much shorter than many of London's landmarks, but an elegant and imposing structure nonetheless. Made of red granite and well over 2,000 years old, the needle was originally erected in 1450 BC, with inscriptions added to commemorate military heroes of the time. Many of the Needle's hieroglyphs are preserved because when the palace the Needle was placed at fell into disuse, it became lodged in the sand and wasn't affected by erosion from the elements. The London needle is part of a pair, the other of which is situated in New York, and its traditional use was as part of an entranceway for Ceasareum, an ancient temple built by Cleopatra to honour her lover Mark Anthony. When the needle was brought to Britain, a special boat had to be constructed to support the structures weight and size, and during the journey six men lost their lives when the ship lost control in inclement weather and a rescue boat was capsized. These men are remembered with a plaque on the monument. The Needle also bears the scars of bomb blast damage during the war, when it was left unrepaired deliberately as a tribute to those who lost their lives. It now stands flanked by two Sphinxes and enjoys a backdrop of some very ornate Victorian buildings.

The needle may be curious enough by itself, but it also contains a time capsule with some peculiar artifacts, including a box of hairpins, a baby's bottle and photographs of the 12 most attractive women of the time when it was erected in London, although its not noted how this will be useful to future generations.

If you want to visit Cleopatra's Needle, the nearest tubes are Temple and Embankment, both of which service the District and Circle lines, so you can easily get to Victoria Station where the Gatwick Express terminates and Paddington Station, where you can catch the Heathrow Express Train.
