Comprising of both a market and a whole district of the city, Covent Garden, London is one of the capitals most popular places with visitors. There are shops, bars, live performers and some of the best entertainment in London all within a few moments of Covent Garden market.

The nearest tube is Covent Garden itself, on the Piccadilly Line, but it is also easily walkable from Leicester Square, Tottenham Court Road and Charing Cross. If you want a mainline rail station then Charing Cross is the nearest, a five to ten minute walk away. Being in the heart of the West End, Covent Garden is incredibly easy to get to. You are just around the corner from the huge cinemas of Leicester Square, the theatres of Shaftesbury Avenue and Drury Lane, the grandeur of the Strand, the second-hand book shops of the Charing Cross Road. With fine restaurants and lively nightspots, Covent Garden does not just consist of day time attractions, but its appeal goes on well into the night.

The square was originally built by Inigo Jones, and the market grew up along its south side. As the area grew and theatres moved in into the eighteenth century, it became seedier, filled with taverns and coffee houses. In 1830 the area was redeveloped by an Act of Parliament and the covered market was erected, and the markets gradually grew over time.  The traditional market moved to Nine Elms in 1974, and in 1980 the covered market reopened as a shopping centre, which it remains to this day.

However, the appeal of Covent Garden does not stop at the wide range of shops, bars and cafes you can find on its central square. It is also a home for the liveliest of street performers, some of the best and most famous in the country. This has been a tradition since the seventeenth century. Samuel Pepys recorded having seen a Punch and Judy show at Covent Garden market in his diary for May 1662. There are street performances every day of the year except Christmas Day at Covent Garden Market, and there is usually one half-hour show every hour.

There are also more than 60 bars and pubs in the surrounding areas, including the Lamb and Flag on Rose Street, reputed to be the oldest pub in the area, and one that has certainly been there since the eighteenth century. Covent Garden is also home to the famous Opera House, as well as the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

Whatever your pleasure, whether it is culture or history, eating, drinking, or shopping, Covent Garden will have something unique with which to delight you. There are theatres, operas, street performers, shops, pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants. It is a bustling, lively part of the West End and remains busy well into the night. It forms a central part of Londons nightlife, slightly more bohemian than nearby Leicester Square, and slightly more respectable than Soho. It should definitely be on the itinerary of any visitor to London.
