It’s about a 400-metre walk to Regent’s Park, one of the largest of central London’s green spaces. The park has a lake with rowing boats for hire and a resident colony of herons, cafes and the splendid Queen Mary’s formal gardens. Also within the park is London Zoo with its famous aviary and its small family of gorillas housed in a purpose-built habitat. Cross Prince Albert Road on the northern border of the park, near the zoo, and you’re immediately in another park, Primrose Hill. Climb to the top of the hill and you’ll get some marvellous views across London.
The Danubius is about a 10-minute walk from Baker Street where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, lived at number 221B. There’s a Sherlock Holmes Museum there with interiors restored to represent what a Victorian era home looked like and various exhibits illustrating the ‘life’ of Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion, Dr Watson.
Lord’s Cricket Ground, where the English national team plays its matches, is a little more than 200 metres from the hotel. Tickets for international games are usually hard to come by, but you are likely to have more luck visiting a county cricket match played by the resident side, Marylebone Cricket Club. You can also take a guided tour of this historic sporting ground, visit the museum there and have a meal at the Lord’s Tavern.
All of the Danubius Hotel’s ensuite guestrooms, some of which are wheelchair accessible, come with air conditioning, flatscreen TVs with pay movies and direct dial phones with voicemail. Other amenities include tea and coffee making facilities, trouser presses, laptop safes and hair dryers. Standard rooms have wifi connections with the first 15 minutes free with charges applying thereafter.
Deluxe suites offer larger rooms with kingsize beds and extra amenities such as complimentary designer toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, and MP3 docking systems. Mineral water, newspapers and a welcome drink are all complimentary, and wifi is also free.
The hotel has a fully-equipped fitness centre, secure parking for a surcharge, and reception, room service and concierge services are all available round the clock. Laundry and dry cleaning services are available as are foreign exchange and safe deposit boxes.
The hotel has a lounge bar and onsite dining is available at Minsky’s New York Deli & Restaurant, open for breakfast lunch and dinner. Minsky’s menu includes dishes like goat's cheese, artichoke and red onion tart, seafood conchiglioni pasta, and Gressingham duck with orange sauce. The restaurant also offers a well-considered wine list.
St John’s Wood Station, on London Underground’s Jubilee Line, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Catch a southbound train and after two stops (about a five-minute journey), you’ll be right in central London at Bond Street. Bond Street is one of the capital’s smartest luxury shopping streets and top international names like Chanel, Burberry, Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton are all represented there.
Stay on the Jubilee for one stop after Bond Street and you’ll arrive at Green Park Station. From there, it’s a few steps to the pleasant 40 acres of Green Park. The park includes a moving memorial dedicated to Canadian service men and women who served in the two world wars. Stroll through the park for 10 or 15 minutes and you’ll arrive at the front of Buckingham Palace.
