The Design Museum was founded 22 years ago by one of Britain's most prolific designers, Sir Terence Conran, whose immaculate taste, exquisite eye for detail and penchant for clean modern lines led him to establish the renowned Habitat furniture store, which brought directional, cutting edge furnishings into the British public's homes. The Design Museum aims to promote pioneering design talent and educate and inspire visitors about this art form which has a subtle yet vital effect on our lives, yet is often taken for granted.
The museum has championed some of the best home grown and international talent, showcasing the work of Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc. Jonathan Ive; Yves Behar, whose packaging for Puma cut the company's carbon emissions by half; and noted architect Zaha Hadid. To this aim, the museum stages the annual 'Design of the Year' competition, which gives new designers a platform to showcase some of the most inventive and useful products of the future and allows established designers to interact with new arrivals to the scene.
The museum has held over 100 exhibitions, spanning the fields of fashion, architecture, digital design, furniture design and graphics. Whether the focus is on environmentally friendly blueprints for the future at Sustainable Living, provocative technological clothing at Hussein Chalayan's exhibition, or even something as humble as a font at Helvetica, visitors will be amazed at how almost everything we touch was brought into form and function by someone's drive and passion. The museum's permanent collection also houses over 2,000 objects spanning the emergence of modernism in the 1900s to the designs of students emerging from Britain's lauded educational institutes such as Central St Martins College of Art and Design. Exhibits range from the deadly form of a Kalashnikov gun to the harmless war mongering of the Space Invaders arcade machine.
If you want to look at the world with a new perspective, The Design Museum is well worth a visit, and there are many fantastic hotels in the surrounding Southwark area just a short walk away. For elegant furnishings and reasonable rates, The Bridge Hotel in Waterloo is a great choice, especially as it is close to one of London's main stations. After perusing the furnishings at the museum you may wish to stay somewhere with similarly stylish fittings and the three-star Southwark Rose Hotel's minimalist style might be just what you're looking for, especially as you can appreciate contemporary design at a cheap rate. For design that harks back to a more genteel era, treat yourself to one of the very opulent rooms at The Royal Horseguards Hotel, where you will find high-quality service and true British class. Alternatively, if you want quintessentially British surroundings with a cheerful ambience at a lower cost, you should consider staying in a pub, where you will find most of London's citizens, The Wellington is a good mix of jovial locals and calm elegant rooms.
