The Docklands area was once London's largest port, a bustling hub of trade activity in east London. They were used as a port in Roman times, but were greatly developed in the Victorian times, when most of the areas known today were created, such as West India Quay.

Workmen in the area formed tight-knit communities with their own customs and culture. Remote from London, especially in the Isle of Dogs area, these communities were strongly opposed to joining up with central London, and the Docks areas were largely wasteland and home to some of London's poorest communities. When you look at the sleek tower blocks, chic eateries and designer flats in the area today it's hard to believe, but it has since been thoroughly redeveloped and due to the area being made an 'enterprise zone', free from property tax, the area has become a booming financial and residential district and even contains some of the tallest buildings in London.

The Docklands development has led to some friction and disparity in the area, where you can see luxury warehouse conversions built alongside social housing estates, although this is not unusual in London, this area perhaps represents the widest gap between rich and poor in the city. This doesn't mean that it isn't a fascinating area to explore and it is now easier to do so than ever as the Docklands Light Railway runs from Poplar to the Isle of Dogs and as an overground tube service, offers stunning views of the city as you ride.

The Docklands are filled with fascinating things to see and do, although perhaps the most reognisable landmark in the area is Canary Wharf tower, or One Canada Square to give it its official title, which is the tallest building in the city. It has no public viewing platform, but it is quite a sight to behold and the surrounding area has many places to visit.

For shopping enthusiasts, there are three huge malls, Cabot Place Shopping Centre, Canada Square Shopping Centre and Jubilee Place Shopping Centre, which contain a range of designer and high street shops. Canary Wharf Riverside is also a very popular place to grab a bite to eat amongst be-suited investment bankers.

Exclusive restaurants such as The Gaucho Grill, The Riverside Cafe and Quadrato offer breathtaking views across the Thames, which makes this one of the most picturesque places to eat in the city. Fisherman's Walk, near West India Quay is also a lively place to stop for a meal. If that's a little out of your price range, you can always pack a picnic and head to Jubilee Park, a man made development which offers some respite from the overwhelming urban environment.

If you want to learn more about the area you can visit the Museum in Docklands, or for a quirkier remnant from the past you can visit the only floating church in London, St Peter's Barge. The area also has several renowned art galleries where you can see some rather fetching paintings and sculptures alongside the public art that dots the area. Robin Gallery, Prenelle Gallery (London's only floating gallery) and Diversity Art Forum are just some of the cultural venues on offer. The Docklands is also home to the vast ExCeL Exhibition Centre, where large-scale exhibition and trade shows are held throughout the year.

There are some hotels in the Docklands Area, but due to its reputation as a wealthy financial centre, these can be pricey. A better option is to stay in South Kensington, a very pleasant area, which has some very reasonable accommodation options and visit the area via the District Line and the Docklands Light Railway.
