Its large facade dominates the corner where Oxford Street becomes New Oxford Street, and the Dominion Theatre, London is one of the capitals most famous attractions, drawing thousands every year to its huge shows.

The nearest tube is Tottenham Court Road, and the Dominion Theatre is just outside one of the exits. The station itself is being redeveloped at the moment, to make way for the new Silverlink station that should be completed in time for the Olympics in 2012. However, much of the surrounding fabric of the junction has been completely knocked down, so it is difficult to know what is going to take its place. Do check before setting off that the tube station at Tottenham Court Road is open. If not, you can walk from Oxford Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, and Goodge Street. Any bus that stops on the eastern end of Oxford Street or Charing Cross Road or Tottenham Court Road can get you within a couple of minutes walk of the theatre. If you intend to drive be aware that you may incur the congestion charge when getting into central London.

St Giles Hotel 5 mins walk from the Dominion Theatre

The site of the theatre was previously the site of the Horse Shoe Brewery, where the London Beer Flood happened in 1814. Although originally opened in the late 1920s as a theatre for live events, the Dominion quickly became a cinema, with a huge capacity of 2,858 in 1940. It was closed for a brief period during the period in which the Blitz was at its most furious, but it reopened in January 1941 and has been open ever since. From 1956 it began running large live shows again, starting with The Judy Garland Show.

The theatre also showed films in the enormous Todd AO system, which could sustain a 46-foot wide screen, and it became popular for showing studio musicals on it, particularly South Pacific and The Sound Of Music. Since the early 1990s the theatre has been home to a number of spectacular musicals, including the current long run of Queen musical We Will Rock You, written by Ben Elton. The Royal Variety Performance has been held at the Dominion six times.

The Dominion still seats more than 2,000 audience members, making it one of the largest theatres in the West End. There is a wheelchair lifting platform which gives access to the stalls, and there is a box available for patrons with wheelchairs. There is an infra-red hearing system available with headsets and neckloops which work with hearing aids on a T-ring system. The theatre also hosts occasional signed performances for the hard of hearing. Binoculars are available for hire, and booster seats are available on a first-come first-served basis.

In all, the Dominion is home to some of Londons most spectacular shows, set in one of its biggest theatres. It is a large, well-proportioned theatre that is a favourite with tourists, and, if the show that is on there is one in which you are interested and you can negotiate the roadworks will disrupt the eastern end of Oxford Street for the foreseeable future, it may be the theatre for you.
