Durley House Hotel is a very luxurious establishment, with a unique concept; an 'all suite' hotel, offering only one, high class of accommodation, to engender an air of exclusivity in this classically stylish hotel. Located near Sloane Square, an area so up market it has bred its own colloquialism, 'Sloanies', referring to residents of the area who are rather fond of the 'cardigan over the shoulders' look. The hotel is situated in one of London's most desirable living quarters, with many major attractions within walking distance.
The hotel is housed in the former residence of Lord Durley and retains the air of a Lordly manor, albeit one where you feel most welcome and at home. The decor in the public areas and suites mixes traditional patterns and silhouettes with clean, contemporary lines and colour schemes to retain some of the traditional grandeur of the building without appearing stuffy. Ornate marble fireplaces and mahogany writing desks harmonise with discrete modern conveniences, to ensure today's traveller has all the comforts of home. All rooms offer complimentary Wi-fi and flat screen TVs as well as a fully fitted kitchen, and many rooms have picturesque views of Cadogan Gardens.
Hotel guests also have priority access to a nearby health club, which encompasses a state of the art gym, a 20 metre swimming pool, a sauna and steam room. The hotel staff are also happy to assist with any requests and can arrange car hire or a limousine tour of the city if you want to see London in style. The hotel doesn't contain a restaurant, but offers 24-hour room service courtesy of their in-house chef, who can whip up some fine dining or even homemade popcorn and brownies for a midnight snack. The area also contains some
Sloane Street is the ideal location for visitors who want to soak up the culture and history of the Kensington area. Art lovers can visit The Serpentine Gallery in the leafy confines of Hyde Park and the often controversial Saatchi Gallery, just an 11 minute walk away; and Proud Chelsea offers a more rock and roll take, with iconic photographs of musicians. History buffs can trek to Kensington Palace, which was built in the 18th century as a summer home for William of Orange. St Peter's Church, the Wellington Arch, The Brompton Oratory and Apsley House are also examples of the many grand historic buildings in the area. The Natural History, Science and Victoria & Albert museums are also within walking distance, where you can appreciate the Victorian enthusiasm for education and exploration, or simply play on the interactive exhibits where you can experience an earthquake or create artwork with gas bubbles. Shopping enthusiasts are also well catered for, with Harrods and Harvey Nichols department stores a short stroll away and the many exclusive boutiques in Kensington and Knightsbridge
The hotel is also very well placed for transport, with good bus and tube links just a few minutes' walk from the hotel. Sloane Square tube station is situated nearby, where you can catch the District and Circle lines. From here you have direct links to Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express terminates); Victoria Station (where the Gatwick Express terminates); King's Cross, St Pancras Station (where the Eurostar terminus is located); and many more areas of London. If you are driving to the hotel, it can be accessed from the main A4 road, via the M4 and M25; however, guests should note that the hotel is in the congestion charge zone. A reasonable car park choice is the NCP just a few minutes walk away in Warwick Road.
Durley House's vintage aesthetic has provoked mixed reactions from previous guests, some of whom found the antique air charming, and some who found it worn and outdated. If you are a fan of contemporary minimalist chic then this may be a touch too quaint for your liking, but the friendly, personalised service and excellent location seem to have won some of the hotel's detractors round. The hotel is pricier than many other options in the area, which is unsurprising considering that your only room choice is a suite, so you may wish to shop around for cheaper rates, as many hotels in the surrounding area offer similar style for less.
