Hotels in Earls Court London

Named after the Earls of Oxford, the de Veres, had their seat in London, Earls Court is a popular destination because of its proximity to Kensington and Central London, and also because of the large exhibition centre.

Until the 1990s, Earls Court was seen as one of the cheaper places to live, closer to central London. It had been home to many waves of immigrants, including Polish and Australians, which led to its becoming known as the Danzig Corridor or the Kangaroo Corridor. However, rising property prices have led to far fewer immigrants moving into Earls Court in recent years, and it is not a down-at-heel and bohemian as it once was. Quite the reverse, in fact, as its residential areas and spacious Victorian homes are fast making it a slightly-cheaper relative to its neighbours in Kensington, Chelsea, and Notting Hill.

The most important attraction in the district is the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, at which many major trade and consumer shows happen throughout the year. One of the most famous is the Ideal Homes Exhibition, which happens at Earls Court every year. It has an Art Deco facade on its Warwick Road entrance, and the tube station has a special exit to give easy access to the exhibition centre.

It is also a live music venue, and has hosted performances by Take That, as well as the Berlin Philharmonic. Although the centre is slated for redevelopment within the next decade, it remains an important cultural venue, and one that is well worth seeing if you are in the area.

Besides the exhibition centre, Earls Court is probably most helpful for reaching the attractions in nearby districts. You are within one tube stop of the museums of South Kensington, or the shops of High Street Kensington, Hyde Park and the Royal Albert Hall.

It has various smaller venues of some interest, however, although nothing as grand as the surrounding districts. The Finborough Theatre is a home of lots of great new writing, and many plays have started there and gone on to tour successfully. There is also the Troubadour coffee house, which doubles as a small music venue that has hosted the likes of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Elvis Costello. Whilst these sights may not have the cultural weight of their more central rivals, they are arguably more interesting that anything you can find  in Kensington.

The streets of Earls Court are also home to the only police box left in Britain (that is not kept in BBC Television Centre). These blue telephone boxes were once a common sight, but fell out of use as policemen got their own radios in the 1970s. The most famous blue box, of course, is the TARDIS, belonging to Doctor Who, and fans should not miss the opportunity to check out a real-life TARDIS on the streets of London.

Although it is becoming more gentrified, Earls Court has a history as a gay area, a Filipino area, an area for immigrants, bohemians, and those who could not afford the genteel terraces of the nearby districts. It still has lots of little areas of interest, and is well worth a visit.
