Earls Court exhibition centre was built in 1937 to accompany the Olympia and Brewery exhibition centres. The first event held there was a chocolate and confectionery exhibition and it has since hosted many more exhibitions, trade shows, concerts, parties, sporting events and award ceremonies such as the BRIT Awards. The centre has 3 million visitors every year and supports 30,000 exhibiting companies over 1,000 events every year.
The centre has a very diverse programme of events such as the Ideal Home Show, the London Boat Show, the Great British Beer Festival and the London Book Fair, making Earls Court an important cultural and trade hub. Acts who have lit up the stage at the centre include Madonna, Elton John, Kylie and the Rolling Stones. The centre is also selected for the 2012 Olympics due to its excellent transport links.
The exhibition centre is located next to the Earls Court tube station, making it easily accessible from all major transport hubs. The District Line has direct links to Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express train terminates) and Victoria Station (where you can transfer to Gatwick Airport. The Piccadilly line goes direct to Heathrow Airport and King's Cross St Pancras Station, where the Eurostar terminates. If you are driving to the venue, you can reach the A4 from the M4 and M25, from which you can reach the centre. Parking is available, but it is advised to book in advance to ensure you have a space waiting for you, it is possible to do this through the website. There are restaurants such as The Terrace, The Troubadour and Wagamamas if you wish to eat in the venue, but there are many restaurants nearby which may be more reasonable and have a better selection of food. A Pizza Express is just two minutes away from the entrance, Bill Wyman's Sticky Fingers restaurant is also close by and Kitchen W8, which serves pricy but renowned European cuisine.
Due to the number of trade shows and exhibitions and the volume of visitors to the centre, there are many reasonably priced accommodation options nearby. For the budget conscious, Boka Hotel, located very near to the tube station, offers a cheap and cheerful bed and breakfast in elegant Victorian surroundings. Dylan Apartments, five minutes walk away from the tube station, offers quiet and private, self-catered units for those who prefer a home away from home. Lord Jim is a well-appointed three star hotel, just three minutes from the exhibition centre, which offers charming traditional, Victorian features and a comfortable bed and breakfast at an extremely reasonable rate.
There are many attractions in the surrounding area, which will make your stay worthwhile. These include Kensington Palace and Gardens, and Hyde Park. About a ten - 15 minute walk away you can visit the Royal Albert Hall to watch some of London's best musical performances; and the Victoria & Albert, Science and Natural History Museums are all located on Exhibition Road, which is a 20 minute walk or a short tube stop away to South Kensington. Whether you are visiting for business and leisure, you can take in an exhibition and do so much more in this fascinating part of London.
