ExCel Exhibition Centre is located in London's Docklands area, in the south east of the city, in between Canary Wharf, where some of the tallest buildings in London and a major finance and business centre is located, and London City airport, a single-runway airport, which is the fifth busiest in London. The award winning centre (by the World Travel Awards, Business Superbrand and more) is owned by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company and covers a vast 100,000 metres square – 65,000 of which is used for exhibiting - including six hotels, 30 bars and restaurants and over 3,700 parking spaces, allowing the centre to put on a programme of spectacular shows and events.
The centre is one of London's newer exhibiting spaces, built in 2000, and rivals west London's historic Earls Court and Olympia centres. It may not be quite as elegant as these centres and it may be in its fledgling years, but ExCeL has proven its mettle with shows such as The London Boat Show (which was only possible due to the centre's waterfront location); WorldSkills London 2011, The British International Motor Show; Grand Designs Live; The Clothes Show and the Global Peace and Unity Event. The centre has also been used for the Britain's Got Talent TV show auditions, and many World Wrestling and boxing championships including fights between champions such as Amir Khan and Daniel Thorpe, and British heavyweights, Audley Harrison and Danny Williams. The centre will also play a huge role in the 2012 London Olympics.
The centre has also spearheaded a number of green and social initiatives, to ensure that it is a useful addition to the landscape and an advantageous addition to the Newham area, which suffers from social deprivation and has a large number of social housing units. The centre was in The Sunday Times 'Top-60 Green Companies in the UK'; it has the largest commercial wormery in the UK, which is used to cut down on food waste; the centre has reduced its gas consumption by 64% since 2008 and it has invested £400,000 in local community projects, such as The Arts Camp and Community Food Enterprise.
The Docklands Light Railway from Prince Regent Station can access the centre, so it has good transport links to the District, Hammersmith & City and Jubilee lines, to reach other areas of London. Occasionally during large shows, an extra shuttle service runs from Canning Town on the Jubilee Line. Visitors who are attending an event or exhibiting can stay in one of the hotels inside the centre; however, these can be pricier than other areas of London, due to their convenience for visitors, and they can book up very quickly during large shows, so a better option may be to stay in South Kensington, where you will find some good budget hotels in a great area for sights and attractions and you can easily change to the DLR by taking the District line tube to Tower Hill.
The ExCel is built like a campus with the exhibition halls to the east and the hotel complex to the west of the campus. Between these two is a wide boulevard with fantastic views of the River Thames, therefore staying in a hotel at Excel is very convenient if you are attending the exhibition center, however, everything else in London is a Docklands Light railway plus a tube ride ride or an expensive taxi trip.
Travelling to ExCel
One of the main factors in the rise of Docklands is the area's outstanding public transport links, and the ExCeL Centre is very well served by rail, underground and air services.
There's no less than three Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations onsite at the ExCeL - Prince Regent, Royal Victoria and the main gateway at Custom House.
The DLR serves all of east London and is a fast, comfortable and convenient way to travel Docklands: you can connect direct from central London via Bank in 25 minutes, or change at Canning Town (two stops from Custom House) onto the Jubilee Underground line.
Canary Wharf, home of many shops, bars and restaurants as well as the iconic skyscrapers of east London's new financial hub is also just four DLR stops from Custom House.
Travelling to the ExCeL from Europe couldn't be easier: the capital's smallest but most convenient airport, London City, is five minutes from the ExCeL via DLR or taxi, and this single-strip airport - famous for ease of check-in and its unusually central location - is connected to many of Europe's business centres.
As Olympic Games development gathers pace, a new transport hub at Stratford International will be served by the Eurostar, and the DLR will eventually link the station to Custom House within ten minutes for international rail travellers visiting the ExCeL.
The centre will be converted into four sports halls for 2012, and the area around will surely benefit even more from the surge of funding transforming this once run-down corner of London for the Games. Drivers visiting the ExCeL will find easy access from the M25, M11, A406 and A13, and there's 4,000 parking spaces onsite as well as a 1,200 capacity park and ride service on Peruvian Wharf.
By Tube: The Jubilee line is recommended as the quickest route to ExCeL London.
By Road: When driving to ExCeL London follow signs for Royal Docks, City Airport and ExCeL There is easy access to the M25, M11, A406 and A13.
By Air: London City Airport (adjacent to ExCeL London) is the leading airport in Europe dedicated to the business traveller.
