Search for cheap hotels near Finsbury
Finsbury is located in North East London, just beyond Tufnell Park and Holloway Road. It is largely known for its Park, which contains football pitches, a bowling green, an athletics stadium, tennis and basketball courts. The park also caters for American sports and contains diamonds for softball and baseball matches, as well as an American Football pitch, so any ex-pats or British fans of the London Mets can enjoy watching a game in the attractive green space. The park also holds huge festivals, such as Party in the Park, a well-attended musical gathering and the Big Gay Out, a similar event to gay pride, with bands, games and stalls.
Finsbury is one of London's greener areas, close to Islington and Shoreditch, but not quite as vibrant and lively as these artistic enclaves. It is largely residential; with the same elegant Georgian and Victorian town houses as found in Islington, and it remains fairly attractive, as it was never hit by heavy industrial development. As the location of the Big Gay Out event, it is unsurprising that the area is one of London's more progressive districts. The borough elected London's first Asian mayor in the whole of the UK, Dr Chuni Lal Katial, in 1938 and in the 40s a statue of Lenin was erected, possibly as a nod to his residency and incitement of radical politics in nearby Clerkenwell. However, this proved a little too controversial for the residents and it has since been demolished.
The area is fantastic for shopping, with many cute and quirky independent boutiques such as Bookartbook Shop, which has an extensive range of, you guessed it, art books; Bobbin Bicycles, where you can get some of the most stylish and practical handmade bike accessories around, perfect for your hipster side; My Sugarland vintage clothing shop; Murdock's where gentleman can get a good, old-fashioned, cut throat shave; and many more, so you will be guaranteed to pick up a unique souvenir from your trip.
Finsbury also has a good selection of fun gastropubs to grab a drink in. Bavarian Beerhouse, a German themed establishment that serves huge tankards, acknowledges the German tradition of foolish season, when punters dress up in silly costumes and proceed to get rather drunk. If this all sounds a little too wacky for you, there are plenty of chic establishments along Seven Sisters Road and in nearby Stroud Green.
Finsbury has great transport links for tourists to explore the city and reach major transport hubs. Finsbury Park Station services the Victoria and Piccadilly lines, which offer direct links to Heathrow Airport (via the Piccadilly line) and Victoria Station, where you can catch the Gatwick Express Train. The station also has a direct link with King's Cross St Pancras Station, where the Eurostar terminus is located. Finsbury is a peaceful area to stay, where you can retreat after a night out in nearby Shoreditch or Angel bars. It is one of the less lively areas in London, but many hotels are chic and have lots of character and you can easily explore the centre of London from the station.
