4 STAR FITZROVIA HOTEL - WALK TO REGENTS PARK
The Grange Fitzrovia Hotel -  90 bedroomed Georgian building converted to a traditional 4 star hotel

"Hotels in Fitzrovia, Central London"

The exclusive area of Fitzrovia was originally named after The Fitzroy Tavern, owned by Charles FitzRoy, who developed the area in the 18th century. Situated between Marylebone and Bloomsbury, close to Euston, the area has enjoyed a reputation for its artistic inhabitants and is regarded as a bohemian area of London, which is what you would expect of a place named after a drinking establishment although much less so nowadays as it was in the 19th and early 20th century. The area is a mix of sleek modern buildings and Victorian brick town houses, mixing the cosmopolitan side of London with its genteel past.

Notable residents of Fitzrovia have included mavericks such as Quentin Crisp, who could be seen swanning around in fabulous outfits, Welsh writer Dylan Thomas and Satanist Aleister Crowley. The area was also home to tragic feminist icon and writer Virginia Woolf; George Orwell, who included his local pub The Newman Arms in his dystopian masterpiece '1984'; persecuted gay poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine; and painters Walter Sickert and Wyndham Lewis, who was a key figure in the Modernist movement.

The area is also very notable for its musical connections; Pink Floyd was the house band at The UFO Club; Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan both played many times in the area; The 100 Club was a prominent venue in the punk scene; the band Coldplay formed in Ramsey Hall, University College London's student accommodation; and Madonna and Lady Gaga both own properties in the area, so if you stay here you will be in some very elite company. Many television companies are based in the area, including MTV, Nickelodeon and CNN, so there area is rife with a media-savvy set, making the many local pubs very buzzy at night.

The area enjoys a close proximity to Tottenham Court Road shops, cafes and bars; Oxford Street's mile and a half of shops; and The British Museum, which contains over 7 million artifacts of historical significance, including The Rosetta Stone, which was used to decode ancient languages. Fitzrovia is also home to Pollock's Toy Museum and several theatres including The Scala, The New Diorama Theatre and The Wheatsheaf, which show a range of comedy, cabaret, musicals and drama by established and up and coming playwrights. The area is also a good place to attend a Private View at one of the many mid-size galleries such as Isis Gallery and Alison Jacques Gallery, or the Animation Art Gallery, for those who prefer their eye candy a bit bolder and brighter.

The area is also famed for the British Telecom Tower, known as the BT Tower. The structure is seen by some as a blight on the landscape as it is covered in satellites and dominates the skyline, however for tourists, it is a useful navigation tool, and although it is closed to the public, it is occasionally used for public displays and in 2011 it was briefly turned into a giant light saber to the delight of Star Wars fans.

The area has fantastic travel connections, close to Euston Square, Warren Street, Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road Stations. From these you have direct links to Paddington and Victoria Stations where the Heathrow and Gatwick Express Trains terminate, and King's Cross St Pancras, where the Eurostar terminal is located. Hotels in the area range from stunning Victorian structures to achingly hip contemporary establishments, although you can find more affordable rooms at a few quirky boutique hotels and nearby areas, such as Euston are filled with low-cost tourist-class hotels of varying quality, so some shopping around is required if you want to stick to a budget.
