Freud Museum

Sigmund Freud may be the butt of jokes about his phallocentric theories, and may have inspired a fair amount of oedipal complexes in his time, but his influence and status as the father of psychoanalysis cannot be denied and his techniques are still used in psychoanalytic practice today. Freud proposed the existence of the libido, the importance of dreams and the subconscious and the hidden messages in free association. His work has been called as enduring as Karl Marx's, Plato's and Friedrich Nietzsche's, some rather weighty company, and he has also caused controversy, with detractors saying that his work is sexist and pseudo scientific; whether you think he was a genius or a quack, there's no denying the man was a fascinating character, which is why The Freud Museum, which has been set up in his former London home, is still a popular tourist attraction.

Freud originated from Austria to Jewish parents. Although he rejected the faith and religion in general, Austria became a very dangerous place for any Jew to be as the Nazi's gained power in Europe, especially a Jewish intellectual. After Freud was awarded the Goethe prize in 1930, by 1933 he had been marked by the Nazis as a hostile presence and the party harassed him. This antagonism grew worse and Freud's daughter Anna was interrogated by the Gestapo. After this, like so many central European Jews of the era, Freud was forced to exile himself and his family from his country. However, he was greatly welcomed in London, in his charming residence in the affluent enclave of Hampstead in London he was to greet and entertain the literati of the time, including H.G.Wells, Salvador Dali and Virginia Woolf, who lived in nearby Bloomsbury.

Although Freud's daughter Anna continued to live in the house after her father's death from cancer, the home has been lovingly restored to how it would have looked when Freud was still practicing there, and visitors can see his study, with his impressive collection of literature and of course, his famous couch, which isn't the typical fainting couch or chez longe people expect, but a comfortable looking sofa piled high with chenille rugs and pillows.

Alongside study of the mind, Freud was also a keen collector of antiquities from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian periods, so visitors can peruse over 2,000 curios from his collection, which he was able to bring with him from Austria. Much of the furniture in the house could also be transported, so there are some very charming pieces to view.

The exhibition is largely a celebration of Freud's life and that of his daughter, who also worked in the field of psychoanalysis, however, there are also talks, events and art exhibitions held in the museum, featuring well-known names such as Louise Bourgeois, Valie Export and Matt Collishaw. Most of the exhibitions held their use psychoanalysis, dreams or the mind as a theme, providing a deeper look into Freud's practice.

The museum truly is a fascinating glimpse into a life spent navel gazing and a portrait of a troubled time too. Unfortunately any secrets told to the man in confidence by the area's celebrity's are long since lost to the ages and the walls don't talk, but if you pop in for a visit, there's a definite possibility you'll leave feeling enlightened in more ways than one.
