The Frontline Club

The Frontline Club is situated in Paddington and is one of the most unique and upmarket eateries and bars in the area. The club was opened in 2003 as the brainchild of surviving members of the Frontline News TV co-operative, freelance cameramen who covered the Romanian Revolution in 1989. The club was primarily formed as a meeting place for war correspondents to meet and discuss the unique trials and tribulations of their careers as well as swap battle scar stories, honour fallen colleagues and enjoy a drink in sophisticated surroundings. The club still has a private members room, however, you must work in the field of war journalism to join, which is a shame as one can only imagine the exciting stories that get passed around over a glass of whisky.

However, if you haven't yet donned a bullet proof vest and reported live from Fallujah, you can still enjoy this fabulous institution, as the club holds a regular programme of talks, photography exhibitions, film screenings and events, which are open to the public, and houses a restaurant, which serves elegant international cuisine in very sophisticated surroundings. Despite being a fairly recent establishment on the London scene, The Frontline Club has a very old school, gentlemen's club feel to it, with huge leather sofas, antique furnishings such as globes and bookshelves and the odd nod to the club's modus operandi, with upturned ammo crates as tables and a selection of historical artifacts dating back to the Crimean War and, perhaps even more impressive, artifacts brought back from war by members, including bullet embedded personal items, which have saved journalist's lives in the past, so you are reminded what the club stands for. The club also has an educational programme, with courses on cinematography and camera techniques in complex situations, to further and support independent journalists' quest for the truth. So much so that the club's founder, Vaughan Smith, invited Wikileak's Julian Assange to stay at his country home when his quest for truth led him into trouble with the authorities.

This may make the club sound rather sober, but the restaurant enjoys a convivial if reverential atmosphere and the food is locally sourced and very tasty. The exhibitions and talks held at the club are rather more sombre, with some harrowing photographs from wars of all eras and talks which inspire discussion and debate amongst visitors, whilst attempting to provide solutions for very complicated situations. These include subjects such as religion's role in conflict, the UN's role in Darfur, the problems of leadership, the consequences of revolutions and power struggles between warring factions. However, there is also the odd comedy night thrown in to lighten the mood, which must be much needed after all that talk of death and destruction. Previous speakers at the club have included stars of the field such as John Simpson and Marie Colvin and notable figures such as Benazir Bhutto and Alexander Litvinenko, so they are well worth visiting for some hardcore insight into the darker side of the world today.
