Golders Green is situated in northwest London, in between Hampstead and Hendon. It is a very pleasant and picturesque suburb, developed in the 19th century when the Golders Green tube station was built as an extension of the Northern Line.
Previously the population of the area had only been about 300 people, but this has changed drastically since. The tube station is still going strong and offers a very convenient link into central London in about 15 minutes. The area is largely residential, with affluent, professional residents, but Golders Green also has a very prominent Jewish community, so you shouldn't be surprised to see many Orthodox Jews with payot sideburns and Tzitzits hanging from their waists and women wearing shpitzel headscarves, wandering about the area.
Golders Green was once known for its Hippodrome theatre, which was home to the BBC concert orchestra until 2003, however the building has since falling into disuse and although its future is uncertain, it is very likely that it will again be used as an entertainment venue.
However, if this doesn't come about, Golders Green is home to some other entertainment venues such as The London Jewish Cultural Centre, which hosts a programme of talks and events throughout the year and has a wealth of information about Jewish history, so it is an interesting place for people of all places to drop in to.
The Artsdepot venue is a multi-purpose space used for art exhibitions, concerts, comedy and theatre, which always has something interesting to offer on its packed programme of events. A more unusual venue is the Gallery of Children's Arts, which is dedicated to exhibiting art by, well, children, although this is decidedly more involved stuff than stick figures and macaroni pictures.
Golders Green is also situated close to Hampstead, which has some rather highbrow cultural venues, such as New End Theatre and Everyman Cinema Club, which is recommended by famed actors and actresses such as Ewan MacGregor and Gianluca Viali.
You can also visit Kenwood House, a grand neo-classical villa housing paintings by Robert Adams and of course you can visit Hampstead Heath. The Heath is a gorgeous spot for a walk or a picnic, with panoramic views of London, many species of birds and wildlife, and sporting facilities for those who want to get their blood pumping. Or if you want to stay close to Golders Green, you can head to Golders Hill Park, which hasn't quite reached the stature of Hampstead Heath, but has picturesque wildlife, tennis courts, jogging trails, playgrounds, a children's zoo, duckponds, cafes and even a space where open-air concerts are held.
Golders Green's international community has had a very direct effect on the local cuisine, with very authentic kosher food and delicious salt beef sandwiches alongside Japanese and Greek restaurants, so it offers many unique dining experiences. Hotels in the area are cheaper than in central London, but the area is fairly quiet and quite far away from major sights, so anyone who wants to experience London proper may wish to stay closer to the centre.
