The Gresham Hotel is situated along Bloomsbury Street, in one of London's most literary districts, home to the Bloomsbury publishing house, the Bloomsbury Group of writers, which included Virginia Woolf, and notable literati such as Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin. The area is safe, peaceful and resplendent with Georgian town houses and landscaped garden squares bestowing an aura of refinement. The hotel offers affordable rates and is close to many of London's biggest sights and attractions, making this a good choice for business and leisure travellers alike.
The Gresham Hotel has basic, simply decorated rooms, which are available Single to Family and Suite sizes, offering a basic style, where bathroom facilities are shared with a surcharge if guests would prefer an en-suite shower and toilet. Some in-room amenities, such as slightly small towels and soap are included. Anyone considering the Gresham Hotel for their London stay should be aware that it is much more basic than other low-cost hotels in the area, which offer a wider array of amenities and a complimentary breakfast for the same price.
The hotel may not have a lot to offer where dining is concerned, but the local area has several excellent eateries where you can get food throughout the day, so it is worth exploring. Le Pain Quotidien and the London Review Cake Shop offer some tempting breakfast treats and for evening meals, chains such as Pizza Express and Wagamamas and international restaurants such as the Korean Woo Jung and Japanese Abeno, offer reasonably priced menus.
The hotel itself may be a little rough around the edges, but its location is 5-star, with The British Museum just a 2-minute walk away, where you can peruse millions of historic artifacts. The University College London and London University campuses are situated close by, which has given rise to some unique attractions in the area, such as The Wellcome Collection, The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology and The Fleming Museum, where you can see the laboratory where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin; making this a fascinating enclave of the city. The British Library is a 7-minute walk away and Oxford Street, where you will find a mile and a half of shops, is just a 10-minute walk away. Huge theatres such as The Donmar and Shaftesbury Theatre, and the many theatres of Covent Garden, where you will also find many independent and designer boutiques, are just a 15-minute walk away. Leicester Square, Chinatown, the colourful bars and clubs of Soho and much more are all easily reached from the hotel, so you can see the best London has to offer with ease.
The hotel also has excellent transport links close by. Tottenham Court Road tube station is just a 5-minute walk away, from which you can travel on the Central Line to Bank, London's business and financial district and on the Northern Line for Waterloo for connections throughout the UK and the South Bank exhibition centres. In Russell Square, a 5-minute walk away, there is a stop for the Airbus, which travels direct to Heathrow and Euston Square Station, 10-minutes' walk away, offers a direct link to Paddington Station, where you can catch the Heathrow Express Train; and King's Cross St Pancras Station for the Eurostar, via the Circle line.
Whilst The Gresham Hotel is closer to the centre of London than some Bloomsbury hotels, it does rely somewhat on the location to draw guests in and as a result not much effort has been made with regards to decor and maintenance in the rooms. There are many other hotels with reasonable rates and charming, well-appointed rooms, so we recommend shopping around before booking so you don't compromise on quality.
