If you walk to Hampstead from Camden, which is just a few minutes away, you will feel as if you are entering another world as the Goths and skate punks are replaced by well-heeled adults in Hunter wellies in the winter and Manolos in the summer, and the garishly coloured brick buildings and market stalls selling pentagram necklaces are outnumbered by enormous, ornate Georgian and Victorian mansions, some of which have been painted in tasteful pastels and have sculptures guarding the doors.

Camden may have become more gentrified, but it will never shake off its rock and roll image enough to match up to its polished neighbour, which has more millionaires within its boundaries than any other area in the United Kingdom.

This is unsurprising as Hampstead enjoys a village atmosphere, with plenty of green space just outside of central London. It also enjoys a wealthy bohemian, trustafarian feel, due to its legacy of notable literary resident, such as W. B Yeats; émigré refugees from the Nazis and avant garde artists. Other notable residents include Lord Byron, Sting, Ozzy Osbourne, Evelyn Waugh, Stephen Fry, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Dame Judi Dench, Ricky Gervais and Peter O Toole, although the list includes many more. Karl Marx used to relish the scorn his neighbours showed for his 'red devil' reputation as he walked his dogs on the Heath.

Perhaps the greatest attraction in the area is Hampstead heath, the devastatingly picturesque, hilly green space, replete with ponds, wildlife and home to 16 different sports, including kite flying and swimming. There are also petanque and volleyball courts and eight children's play areas, so it is a great place to visit if travelling as a family. The area has also been used in films such as Notting Hill, and the area has occasionally courted controversy, when the film Scenes of a Sexual Nature were filmed there and also when resident singer George Michael too advantage of the area's notorious gay cruising reputation.

Hampstead also houses unique attractions such as The Freud Museum, where you can tour the founding Father of psychiatry's house and possessions; the Everyman Cinema, one of the oldest cinemas in the world, dating from 1933, which shows vintage and foreign cinema; and John Constable's House, where the painter stayed when he was painting the Heath, which was decidedly more rural in his day.

Shopping enthusiasts should head to Hampstead High Street for designer, high street and unique independent boutiques, which cater to the rich, local clientele, but don't necessarily have exclusive prices. The high street also houses a range of genteel cafes and eateries, with up market chains such as Giraffe and Carluccios, to fine dining at Base Bistro and La Cafe Imaginaire, as well as some quirky gems, such as The Hampstead Butcher, which does very reasonable and boozy meals; GAIL's Bakery and Slice of Ice ice-cream parlour. Hampstead also has a fantastic selection of relaxed, historic pubs, where you can order designer spirits and top-draw ales and ciders.

Hampstead also enjoys good transport links, with Hampstead tube station on the Northern Line and Hampstead Heath Station on the overground service, with links to East London and West London as far as Richmond. Hotels in the area reflect the affluence of its inhabitants, but it may be worth treating yourself, as it is an exquisite place to stay. If hotel prices are too prohibitive, it is worth checking out hotels in Camden, where you might be able to get a better deal and still be within walking distance of The Heath.
