Harrods

With the motto 'All Things for All People, Everywhere', you would expect Harrods, Britain's second largest department store to have an extensive selection of goods, and with 330 departments in over 1 million square feet of selling space, it doesn't disappoint.  From pets to the latest designer fashions, to monogrammed freezers you can find almost anything you might want to buy here.

The store also has a bank, which sells gold bars 'off the shelf'; a service which reflects Harrods' very affluent South Kensington location. The store may cater to an exclusive clientele on a daily basis; however, whether you are a wealthy 'Sloan Ranger' from nearby Sloane Square, or travelling on a budget, Harrods' staff are extremely friendly and helpful to all customers. As this is one of the most famous stores in the world, the staff will go above and beyond to uphold its indomitable reputation. This is reflected in customer praise, who have said that the VAT refund service they received was the easiest they had experienced and that staff allowed children to play with toys before they were purchased. With many services on offer, including personal shopping, you will undoubtedly feel well looked after, and disabled customers are also catered for in the store.

The store was first established in 1824 and it was the first store to install an escalator, offering nervous Victorian customers brandy once they had ascended; however customers seem hardier nowadays and ascending the Egyptian escalator (where there is a memorial to Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed, previous owner Mohamed Al Fayed's son) can be akin to a religious experience for hardcore shopaholics. To avoid any disappointment, it is best to make sure you are dressed appropriately as Harrods' notorious dress code policy is still enforced although it has been relaxed considerably since it was instigated in 1989; but tight leggings, ripped jeans, too much flesh on show and mohicans will be left out in the cold.

Once you make it inside, you will be overwhelmed by the selection of goods. Whether you are looking for luggage, toiletries, clothing, footwear, electrical goods, furnishings or sports goods, you'll find it here. Even if you are not looking to buy Harrods is still worth a stroll around to gape at the selection or perhaps have a chat with Harry, the store parrot.

If all that shopping makes you hungry, Harrods has a renowned food hall, with a wide selection of luxury produce. With a butchers, a tapas bar, a cheese bar, an enormous sweets section and a fine selection of wines and spirits you will find a treat to take home for later; or you can enjoy a meal in one of 32 restaurants, so you don't even have to leave the store for lunch. Harrods is also famous for its sale, which is often opened by a celebrity each year; however, if you are planning to visit, be warned that it can be very busy and you may have to elbow your way to your desired purchase, but the discounts make the scrum worthwhile.

There is a lot to see in the store, and many more designer and high street shops nearby, so choosing a hotel in the area is advisable. Good accommodation options include The Capital hotel, Egerton Hotel, Sheraton Park Tower Hotel and Millenium Knightsbridge hotel; all of which offer you a stay in the lap of luxury, with service which matches that offered in store. For a cheaper option, which is slightly further away from the store, The Knightsbridge Green Hotel offers comfort and style for a relatively cheaper price. Harrods is just a short walk from Knightsbridge tube, which services the Piccadilly line, so if arriving on the Eurostar you can easily reach it from King’s Cross, St Pancras Station. Harrods is definitely worthy of a visit, whether browsing or splashing the cash; it's an awe-inspiring empire of consumerism that has to be seen to be believed.
