Search for cheap hotels near Haunch of Venison Gallery

When exploring in the West End of London, just behind the Royal academy of Arts, beyond the exclusive shops of Bond Street and Hanover Square and just a skip, hop and jump from Claridge's Hotel, you will find an ornate neo-classical building with a colonnaded facade, which doesn't sit too easily with the sleek, glass-fronted shops and office blocks close by. Not large enough to be a Palace, but big enough to be of note, this is Haunch of Venison gallery, which gets its curious moniker from its location in Haunch of Venison yard. It may look like a miniature version of the Tate Britain, but don't let appearances fool you, because Haunch of Venison shows only contemporary art, some of the most intriguing and cutting edge around, which has made this anomalous gallery one of the most popular in the city.

The gallery opened in 2002 as the brainchild of art dealers Harry Blain and Graham Southern. The inaugural show featured artist Rachel Whiteread, a sometimes-controversial figure, who is best known for winning the Turner Prize in 1993, for her piece House. Since its opening, the gallery has been sold to the auction house Christie's International plc. and curator Matthew Carey Williams now looks after it.

The artists the gallery represent doesn't read like a who's who of the Young British Artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin, and refreshingly, the gallery choose to represent lesser known talents such as Rina Banerjee, whose work heavily references her Indian background; Keith Coventry, who paints colourful abstracts; Thomas Heatherwick, who paints biological forms with a twist; and mixed-media maestro Jamie Shovlin, whose work was snapped up by none other than Charles Saatchi, in his first exhibition, for £25,000. Haunch of Venison also have a New York branch, where punters will find more recognisable names such as Mark Rothko and Willem De Kooning, but the London branches insistence on veering away from big names has made them a firm favourite, even without the pomp and cool credibility of galleries such as Tate Modern and The Serpentine.

Haunch of Venison has just the right mix of grandeur and accessibility and although it isn't exactly a hidden secret amongst Londoners, its tucked away location means that, unlike some of London's larger galleries, you can wander around unimpeded, even during opening nights of shows and weekends. The gallery has also fared well from its locale, nestled amongst some of the wealthiest households in the city. The West End district is also close to almost all major London sights and offers visitors some of the best food, shopping and nightlife in the city. There are plenty of hotels nearby, which can be pricey this close to central London, but some offer surprisingly reasonable rates, so even if you're on a budget you can have London on your doorstep. The Radisson Edwardian Berkshire is a stylish 4-star hotel in a very convenient location on Oxford Street. The Marylebone Hotel offers very funky modern decor for the traveller who wants something out of the ordinary. The Churchill Hotel offers guests sophisticated design and a high level of service, and Wigmore Court Hotel offers low-cost but comfortable rooms for those who don't want to stretch their budget too tight.
