Hendon in northwest London is a peaceful blend of town and country, with a calm suburban feel and plenty of green spaces nearby. Like many other areas on the outskirts of London, Hendon as developed in the Victorian period, when motoring industries arrived in the area.
At first glance, Hendon may look like an appealing but otherwise unremarkable part of the city, but the area has an important claim to fame, in the form of the Hendon Aerodrome. This centre made pioneering advances in World War II, where the RAF created the first Air Mail, had the first parachute descent from a powered aircraft, night flights and the first aerial defence of a city, which contributed towards the UK's success in the war. The Aerodrome has since been turned into the RAF Museum, where you can see over 100 aircraft and try your hand at interactive activities. The area also has a picnic area, so you can enjoy the surrounding green space when you have finished looking around.
Hendon also contains the Jewish Military Museum, dedicated to Jewish soldiers and victims of the war, and the Church Farmhouse Museum, which documents Hendon's history and heritage. Hendon Park is also a very picturesque spot to go for a jog or a nature walk, with bird habitats and the Holocaust Memorial Garden. The Hendon War Memorial is a very austere monument where you can pay your respects. Like Highgate, Hendon is also home to a graveyard with some notable internments, such as Sir Stamford Raffles, who founded Singapore. Although some might prefer to skip this slightly morbid attraction, fan of gothic horror might want to stop by, because Dracula writer Bram Stoker was heavily inspired by the moratorium.
Hendon is located near to Mill Hill, where you will find Copthall Gardens, a vast park area with nature walks and flowering beds. Hendon's location also means it is very convenient for access by the M1. Hendon isn't known for its nightlife per se, but the area has a good selection of traditional pubs, such as The Claddagh Ring, which used to be a favourite of politician Peter Mandelson when he lived in the area, although locals may be rather glad that he's moved on to more upmarket establishments. Hendon also has a good selection of restaurants, with chains such as Wagamamas and Carluccio's and international eateries such as Kimchee for Korean food, La Fiesta for tasty Argentinean steak and the area's proximity to Golders Green mean there are some great kosher restaurants, such as Solly's and Bloom's.
Hendon tube station is situated on the Northern Line, so you can easily reach central London in 20 minutes and you have a direct link to King's Cross St Pancras Station for travel on the Eurostar. Hotels in the area are cheaper than in central London and the museums and open green spaces make this a great area for families to stay in, however, those who want to experience the excitement of London's nightlife may prefer to stay in Camden, which is a few tube stops away and travel to Hendon for the day.
