Search for cheap hotels near Herne Hill Velodrome
The 2012 London Olympics may be giving rise to a shiny new set of sports venues throughout London, especially in the Stratford area where the Olympic park is located, but the event is also bringing existing venues bang up to date. A case in point is the Herne Hill Velodrome, which was built for the 1948 London Olympics. This fantastic venue operates during the year as one of London's best loved cycling tracks and it has spawned many of Britain's top cyclists.
"A new generation of fans"
Cycling has become an increasingly popular pastime in the UK, due to concerns about the environment, a wish to curb the country's reliance on fuel and a need for a cheap and efficient method of travelling round this vast city. There has always been an interest in professional track cycling, but with cycling's newfound style status, there has been a spike of interest in the sport and Herne Hill has found a whole new generation of fans.
"The oldest cycling track in the world"
The Herne Hill Velodrome is the oldest cycling track in the world, built by amateur racer George Hillier in 1891, superseding the former popular track at Crystal Palace. After a few false starts and unfortunate crashes when the track was coated with an uneven surface and an unreliable wooden surface, the track was coated in concrete and became the safe, professional circuit it is known as today. The race season at Herne Hill starts in March each year and 17 races are held before the track closes in September. This includes the renowned Good Friday Meeting, which has been an annual tradition since 1903, where world champions compete and thousands are in attendance. Greats such as Jacques Anquetil, Fausto Coppi, Reg Harris and Tom Simpson have all competed during this prestigious race.
"Amateurs are welcome"
If you enjoy cycling and fancy trying your luck on a professional circuit, you're in luck! Herne Hill Velodrome isn't exclusively for professional cyclists and welcomes amateurs onto the track. The Velodrome allows cyclists of all ages to encourage children to take up cycling as a professional career and to promote good health; you can also ask for a few pointers if you spot a professional cyclist training. To reach Herne Hill Station, you can travel overground from Victoria Station in about 10 minutes. It is advised to stay in Victoria as there are fewer hotels in Herne Hill and you will be closer to the sights and attractions of central London. There are hotels in Victoria to suit all budgets and tastes, including the Enrico Hotel, a basic but welcoming establishments with very reasonable room rates. The Grosvenor Hotel offers something a bit grander for the more discerning traveller, with elegant bedrooms and an excellent restaurant. The Goring is also an extremely luxurious hotel, with refined, period features throughout and a high level of service, and Topham's Hotel is a delightful, stylish, boutique style hotel located in the exquisite Belgravia area of Victoria.
