The oldest diplomatic posting in London

The High Commission of Canada in London has, at times, had large prints of singer turned photographer Bryan Adams, photographs hanging outside as a method of promoting Canadian culture. To be diplomatic, the photographs aren't bad, but cheesy rockers such as Adams are just part of the reason why Canadians are often the butt of jokes and the creators of South Park seem to be on a mission to single handedly destroy any vestiges of cool Canada has. However, the UK are not so virulent in their mocking of Canadians, and for good reason, since we used to rule large parts of the country and our monarch still rules over Ottawa. Although Canada is now largely independent of Britain and the two countries are in different trading jurisdictions, NAFTA and the EU respectively, the two countries still have a strong bond, so the High Commission plays an important role in maintaining relations between the two, even if it involves encouraging Bryan Adams.

The Canadian Embassy is the oldest diplomatic posting in London, dating back to 1880, and is located in the grand Macdonald House building on Grosvenor Square in the Mayfair district of London. The High Commission primarily deals with VISAs and immigration issues; although British citizens do not require a VISA, many residents of different nationalities in the UK do, so the High Commission can help provide information on how to obtain a VISA for entry, whether on vacation or looking to work in Canada.

The High Commission can also help students in the UK who want to study in Canada. With over 15,000 Britons studying in Canada each year and some of the lowest tuition fees and living costs, it is a very popular activity and the High Commission has a wealth of information to help those crossing from the UK to Canada and vice versa. The High Commission also encourages investment in Canada from the UK and help Canadians to build businesses in the UK alongside providing vital import and export information. You can also connect with Canada's science and technology network, which is dedicated to furthering research.

Of course, the High Commission also protects bilateral relations between the UK and Canada, facilitating mutually beneficial political connections, commercial enterprises, military interests in home and abroad and keeping the government abreast of any changes in domestic and foreign policy. This is a very important job, to ensure that human rights are maintained and economies in both countries are kept afloat; however, the High Commission doesn't just deal with bureaucracy, it also promotes Canadian culture, outside of Bryan Adams, and promotes events, which are relevant to Canada or have been created by ex-pat Canadians.

Grosvenor Square is a very genteel part of London, close to exclusive shops, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park and many more sights and attractions within walking distance, so it is a fabulous place to stay during your trip, if expensive. The Millennium Hotel is situated on Grosvenor Square, offering attractive views and elegant guest rooms. The Berkshire Hotel is mere minutes from the shops of Oxford Street and offers a touch of class and sophistication in its decor. The Metropolitan Hotel is situated on Park lane, offering chic, minimalist decor and one of London's trendiest hotel bars, and Park Lane Mews Hotel offers fairly affordable rates for such an affluent part of the city.
