High Commission of India

Hotels near to the Indian High Commission in London

The High Commission of India is located in Aldwych in London's West End district, close to the Theatreland district, Charing Cross and many more major London sights and attractions, making it the perfect place to stay near, even if you don't require their services.

There are plenty of hotels nearby, which are a little pricier than most in London, but offer extremely convenient travel.

One Aldwych is a 5-star hotel close to Covent Garden, with sophisticated, design-led rooms and a pool.

The Strand Palace Hotel has London theatres on its doorstep and offers fairly reasonable rates for such a central location.

Kingsway Hall also offers fairly affordable rates and has very tasteful, comfortable rooms, and Chancery Court Hotel is more traditional in style, offering 5-star luxury throughout.

London's Indian population is the largest non-white ethnic minority group in the UK, numbering over 500,000. All different national identities and creeds are represented, from Bengal to Tamil, Hindu to Parsi, contributing significantly to London's cultural make-up, from Brick Lane's 'Curry Mile' to the stunning Shri Swaminarayan Manir Hindu temple in the north west of the city.

The UK and India have had long and at times, troubling ties, from the days when Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India and it was colonised as part of the British Empire. However those days are long behind us and now Britain and India have a strategic partnership, which goes far beyond a shared love of cricket. The High Commission of India in London helps to facilitate relations between the UK and India alongside helping Indian citizens feel at home in the UK.

British citizens, and many other nationalities living in the UK, who will be travelling to India do require a VISA to enter the country, and the High Commission can help you to organise this for your trip and can provide invaluable information about the country before you go.

The High Commission is also active in helping Indian citizens become international students in the UK and due to donations from GlaxoSmithKline and a partnership with the Global Gateway Initiative of the UK Department for Education and Skills, they have helped to create 50 research fellowship places for outstanding students, further strengthening the UK's international bonds. The High Commission also helps British citizens who wish to study in India through a UK-India school linkage programme.

The High Commission also offers a very useful service for any Indian tourists who have lost their passport whilst in the UK, and offer advice to any citizens affected by crime, fraud or language difficulties; so you should make this your first port of call if you experience trouble in the UK. On a lighter note, the High Commission also gives permission for film companies to use Indian locales and offers a wealth of information about the country in its archives.

The High Commission offers far more than bureaucratic aid and seeks to promote Indian culture in the UK. Bollywood cinema has become very popular in its own right in the UK, with a specific Bollywood section at Madame Tussauds wax museum and actresses such as Aishwarya Rai starring in British and Indian films.

Indian art is also very popular as evidenced by the recent contemporary Indian art exhibition at The Saatchi Gallery called 'The Empire Strikes Back' and the successful Green Cardamom Gallery, which only exhibits Indian artwork. The Nehru Centre at the High Commission is dedicated to Indian culture, encompassing music, dance, theatre and much more, with a series of talks and lectures, many of which are free to attend.
