Trafalgar Square, in the West End in central London, is home to some of the city's most beloved landmarks, including the grand National Gallery, Nelson's column and the Fourth Plinth, which is repopulated by a new contemporary artwork every year. It is one of London's busiest thoroughfares and with such majestic architecture, it's unsurprising that it is also home to the embassies of London, and to the east of the Square lies the South African Embassy.

"140,000 South African born citizens live in the UK"

Over 140,000 South African born citizens live in the UK and many British ex-pats call South Africa home, so the embassy plays an important role in keeping diplomatic relations between the two countries. South Africa is also a popular holiday destination, being much sunnier than England, and Britons require a VISA to enter the country, a service that is offered by the Embassy. Other services offered include residential permits for those who wish to live abroad, exchange permits to enable British students to study abroad and vice versa, work permits and business permits, to promote employment of skilled British workers in South Africa and business investment in the country. This is an important feature of the Embassy and plenty of aid and assistance is in place for those wishing to expand into international markets, from South Africa and the UK.

"Promoting South African culture"

Aside from helping to facilitate travel and trade between the two countries, the Embassy is also the base of the South African police force in the UK, who offer help to South African communities and citizens who have been affected by crime. The Embassy also keeps control of customs, excise and taxation; watch out for South African military interests; and have a maritime and transport department. The Embassy also holds events to promote South African culture and heritage, with wine tasting events, speeches by high-ranking officials and a range of trade shows.

"Nelson Mandela's Freedom Day speech"

The Embassy was a High Commission before 1961, when South Africa became a republic and withdrew from the Commonwealth of Nations, and South Africa House, the ornate building the Embassy is housed in has been the site of protests in the past, due to the issue of racial segregation in South Africa. However, in 1994, South Africa's first democratic elections were held and the Embassy became a High Commission once again and since the site has been a peaceful part of London, where Nelson Mandela gave a speech in 2001 to celebrate Freedom Day.

"Within walking distance of all major London sights"

If staying in London, choosing a hotel in Trafalgar Square will put you within walking distance of almost all major sights in London and if you require the services of South Africa House during your stay you will be nearby. Hotels in this central part of London do tend to be more expensive than most, but for the added convenience, you won't mind the extra money. The Strand Palace Hotel, just a 6-minute walk from Trafalgar Square, offers fairly reasonable rates and comfortable bedrooms in an ornate building. Citadines Trafalgar Square offer cosy apartment units just minutes from the square. The Trafalgar Hilton overlooks the Square itself, offering stylish bedrooms and an award-winning bar, and The Royal Trafalgar Hotel is situated in a relatively quiet part of the area, with fair room rates and a restaurant, which has been awarded an AA Rosette.
