Search for cheap hotels near Highbury
Highbury in the Borough of Islington lies in between Finsbury and Canonbury in North London. Its history stretches back to Roman times and when Highbury Manor as first built, roman tiles were excavated. Since then the Manor saw a revolt and was demolished, and Highbury has become developed into a desirable residential district, which is a bit less exclusive than neighbouring districts, but no less charming. The sheer number of celebrities who live in the area is testament to the exclusivity of the area. These include, Mayor Boris Johnson, Rowan Atkinson, chef Nigel Slater, writer and dedicated Arsenal supporter Nick Hornby and historian David Starkey, so if you choose to stay here you will be in good company.
With a curious mix of Victorian and modern architecture, parts of Highbury are more picturesque than others, but the area contains a great selection of restaurants and shops, gig venues and it is a fantastic destination for football fans as the former Arsenal Stadium, now known as the Emirates Stadium is located here, and there is an Arsenal Museum to peruse for those who are truly dedicated.
The area around Highbury & Islington tube Station is a great place to find a lively venue for the night, from the submerged Buffalo Bar, where you will find alternative club nights with various imaginative dress codes, to the London Union Chapel, a fantastic working church where many gigs are held covering a wide variety of styles and genres. The venue is especially magical at Christmas when the chapel is lit up and decorated. There is also a wide range of pubs such as The Famous Cock Tavern and The Library, which cater for those who want a pint in a traditional British pub, and those who want something a bit trendier. The Garage is Highbury's other music venue, which caters to a young alternative crowd, playing metal and punk music. Highbury also has a few great restaurants to be found amongst the fast food chains and a fantastic selection of unique shops selling quirky homewares and designer clothing and jewellery. In the summer months, Highbury Fields is a pleasant outdoor space to enjoy a picnic, whilst it may be a little rougher round the edges than Regent's Park, it is close to the high street and very popular with the locals.
Highbury is in a fantastic location for exploring the best of north London, with Angel just a ten minute walk away from the station and stunning green space Finsbury Park a 15 minute walk to the north, as well as the artistic villagey area of Stoke Newington just a short bus ride away, you will be in a very good location. Transport links from Highbury are also good, with overground connections to Dalston, Hackney and Stratford, where the Olympics site is located and Westfield shopping centre. Highbury & Islington tube station services the Victoria Line, which provides a direct link to Victoria Station, where the Gatwick Express terminates. Hotels in the area may be cheaper than Angel nearby, but still fairly pricey due to the Stadium. Hotels in King's Cross may be better suited for travellers sticking to a tight budget.
