Raglan Hotel is a 50 room, 3 star stylish hotel which is based in Muswell Hill, North London.

It may not sit at the top of the Northern tube line, but Highgate Village does somewhat feel like the topmost point of London. Perched atop a hill, with stunning panoramic views of London from some points and a self-contained village feel to the area, with some extraordinarily affluent residents, Highgate feels like the snooty surveyor of the rest of the city and an entity to itself. So much so, that Highgate even has an active conservation body, The Highgate Society, who maintain the integrity of the area's character. That's not to say that Highgate isn't also a welcoming place, The Flask pub, with its artisan ales, elegant gastropub food and lively courtyard, which always seems to be full, is a great place to grab a drink on the weekend and a firm favourite with the locals, some of whom happen to be celebrities, so there's a good chance you'll see Kate Moss or Sting tucking into a plate of fish and chips.

Highgate was largely developed in the Victorian and Georgian era, and many of the area's buildings are Grade II listed, and the elegant town houses contribute to the beauty of the area greatly. The area was largely woodland, but when roads and estates were built in the area it became notorious for highwaymen, including Dick Turpin, who used to terrorise visiting noblemen. Highgate remains largely unchanged from when it was first developed as a residential district and one of the area's most interesting, if morbid, attractions is its historic cemetery, where Karl Marx was famously interred, in case you're uncertain, his is the grave with a huge sculpture of his head on it. Tours of the cemetery are frequently carried out in the week and there are several famous former residents buried there, including Christina Rosetti, Douglas Adams and Sidney Nolan, and some unusual gravestones for local artists who lived nearby.

Highgate Village also contains a range of independent boutiques and some of the most up market charity shops you will find in London. Encompassing artisan butchers, garden centres, designer pet stores, tea shops and quirky bookstores, the selection does reflect the moneyed clientele, but offer a refreshing break from high-street chains. Highgate Village also has a range of chic brasseries with international fusion food on the menu and even a Pizza Express for those who aren't as moneyed as the locals. The surrounding area is also very green and leafy, which makes it a nice break from the urban gloom of London. Queen's Wood is a very picturesque spot to take a stroll and town and country meet in one of London's most unique nature walks along the disused Alexandra Palace Rail line, where you can see flowering plants and local wildlife alongside railway arches strewn with graffiti.

Highgate also enjoys good transport links with London, although the village itself is only accessible by bus, as Highgate tube station sits at the top of Archway Road, downwind of the village, which can be inconvenient. Luckily bus links to the city are good and frequent, so you won't feel stranded. Highgate tube station services the Northern Line, from which you can reach King's Cross St Pancras Station for Eurostar services in about 15 minutes, and the sights and attractions of central London. Highgate Village contains very few hotels, and the ones situated there are very expensive, a better option is to look downhill at Archway or stay in Camden, which has some cheaper hotels in a very lively environment, and is only a few tube stops away from Highgate.
