The Hippodrome

The Hippodrome, once a huge music hall, is now a casino and club complex on the corner of Charing Cross Road and Leicester Square. It is not to be confused with Golders Green Hippodrome, which the BBC use as a recording venue, which is in Barnet. If you are coming to the Hippodrome, make sure your taxi driver is taking you to the right one, the one on Leicester Square. Golders Green is quite a long way away.

Frank Matcham designed the facade for the London Hippodrome which often changes uses, although it currently serves as a casino and night club, although there are also offices in the building. The building was originally intended to house a circus, a water spectacle, and a music hall all in the same building, and its bar was fitted out to look like that of an ocean liner. The central circus area was built on hydraulic ramps that could be raised and lowered, and the lowest level could be flooded with 100,000 gallons of water.

The theatre opened in 1900 with a series of spectacular shows involving water, many of which also included polar bears and live elephants. However, by 1909 the novelty had worn off, and the Hippodrome became a more standard music hall with none of the water features. In 1912 it became home to the Albert de Courville revues, with various plays and musical comedies coming after these.

Julie Andrews made her stage debut on the boards at The Hippodrome in 1945, at the age of 12 in Starlight Roof. In 1951 they hosted the London appearance the Folies Bergeres. Many other artists played at the Hippodrome as it moved more towards concerts and away from book musicals. They included Eartha Kitt, Jimmy Tarbuck, Shirley Bassey, Sammy David Jr, Stevie Wonder, Sacha Distel, and Judy Garland.

In 1983 Peter Stringfellow bought the venue and opened it as a night club. Every week Thames TV would broadcast a television program Live From The Hippodrome, which featured guest artists like Barry Manilow and Gloria Estefan. Jools Holland also hosted a regular show at the Hippodrome. In 2004, the Hippodrome reopened as Cirque, the circus-themed superclub that it remains to this day. Whilst other Leicester Square-based superclubs have fallen by the wayside or not managed to keep their doors open, Cirque at the London Hippodrome manages to be distinct enough to maintain a clientele.

To get there, the closest tube station is Leicester Square, and it is directly opposite the exit. However, it is also within easy walking distance of Piccadilly Circus, Covent Garden, and Charing Cross, which is also the nearest mainline railway station. There are many buses from nearby Oxford Street and Trafalgar Square, as well as up and down the Charing Cross Road.

Whilst it has changed its purpose many times in the more than a century since it was built, the London Hippodrome, or Cirque as we must now call it, remains a spectacular hotspot a long time after Frank Matcham built it to be exactly that.
